Product Description
Adding this B&M SuperCooler keeps the ATF and transmission cooler, and keeping a vehicle's transmission cool is essential for dependability, especially in performance applications. The unit is designed to be very efficient for its size and weight, to cool much better than an ordinary 'fin and tube' cooler, and to reduce the risk of lube system failure. Using fluxless, oven brazed construction for vibration resistance, it is built out of lightweight aluminum alloy and features a revolutionary 'stacked plate' design with multiple oil flow paths. The unit monitors resistance to flow by allowing a controlled amount of ATF to pass through a self-regulating orifice. Controlled by viscosity, thicker ATF is returned directly to lube through two bypass openings in the stacked plate core, while thinner ATF is directed through the core to cool as operating temperatures increase.

Installation:
The installation was quite easy with the supplied hardware and instructions (it took me about 2 hours, including fighting an old cooler and stuck hoses), basically: Trans. outlet -> radiator ATF cooler IN -> radiator ATF cooler OUT -> aux. cooler IN -> aux. cooler OUT -> Transmission inlet, this should represent a typical serial installation. You can switch the aux. or the radiator cooler position in that diagram and it will work just the same. Also, keep the cooler at least 1" away from the radiator or condensator and there will be a better airflow and reduced heat transfer between these parts, and make sure it's nice and tight in place, held at least in 3 different points to prevent any vibration. The hoses should have nice, soft bends, to prevent them from blocking the ATF flow or break, and of course be careful of any objects that could cut them, if there is a minimum possibility, flexible PVC conduit and tie-wraps are your friends.
The Cooler:
The cooler itself is made of aluminum, which looks like a quality/sturdy alloy and will keep corrosion at bay, it comes painted black, which helps keep the installation discrete and makes the unit look good, both ports (IN/OUT) are on top of the unit and any can be used as inlet/outlet. The design is the stacked plate style, which in theory is 33% more efficient than a tube and fin model of the same dimensions. Only time will tell if the unit is up to the road hazards and if the quality/durability are in par with the price, for now I consider this a great purchase.
If like me, you're in a quest to make your E4OD or other auto trans live longer then you should also consider a Shift Kit, this one is specific for the E4OD: B&M 10025 Shift Improver Shift Kit
I decided to spend twice as much for this because of the stacked plate design. Since it is close to the ground immediately behind the grill this seemed like a more durable solution. I used the included brackets along with some rubber washers and I accomplished a perfect installation. I have about 1.5 inches in between the radiator. I didn’t remove the front bumper and you won’t have to either if you drive an xb2. And yes- the xb2 makes a great toe vehicle after Trd shocks springs and struts, an anti sway bar and airlyft air struts in rear.
I researched online how to install one and I decided to put it in on my own in my 2011 Scion xB. It took about a little more than an hour. I didn’t remove the front bumper- it’s not necessary. I bought an additional 4 foot hose. I bought a connector from autozone to connect the out line from the radiator into the cooler and then into the transmission. An additional 4 foot hose is needed along with 1 or two 3/8 “ connectors to make is a super easy install. I didn’t cut any hose- I figured the longer the transmission oil runs around outside of the trailer the cooler the transmission would be.
During normal aggressive stop and go traffic with some highway I noticed a reduction of 20 to 30 degrees. Almost all conditions were identical without pulling a trailer.
The real shocker was how well this thing managed while pulling a load. I was pulling with slightly hillier terrain 4 weeks ago but slightly cooler temperatures. I used an ir gun to measure the bottom of the pan and at times after stopping the car I was measuring 225 degrees.
Today I started driving with my pop up camper and it was 77 degrees. I left it in overdrive, which I suspect is not really over drive, but really 4th gear in my 2011 Scion xB. I took it up and down some hills. And it is as if it kept cooler then if I wasn’t pulling anything. I guess this is where the stacked plate design really shines. I took it up to 77 mph- it seems to stay 50 or more degrees cooler then when I had no cooler.
I was afraid I went too small, now I see I didn’t.
To measure the temperature now I use a meat thermometer with a probe taped with aluminum tape right to the out line where it comes out of the transmission. $8 Walmart. It is wireless. It is within 4 degrees of the ir gun which is good enough for me. It is far cooler then I ever expected.
Can a transmission will run too cold? I dunno. Depends who you ask. I won’t worry about it.
Go buy it today. If you drive an xB 2nd gen- install this cooler, install Trd shocks and springs, air Lyff springs and an anti sway bar. Drive it like you ordinarily would like this while pulling up to 1500 pounds and I don’t think you would ever regret it.

Now to the product. First off, the quality of the product. The cooler itself seems to be well-made. The package came with many mounting options. The clamps that came with it are junk. They are the same one I have bought at home Depot for $.99. these "worm" design clamps, in past experience always loosen off from the hot and cold and flexing. I used these on a transmission line, and I would tighten them right now, then a few more than later, they are loose, if you leave them, they will leak! Go get yourself some quality fuel line clamps, or use the factory constant pressure clamps as these will maintain constant clamping as the hose ages and goes through hot and cold cycles.
On the b&m website, this cooler features the ability to "hold back" the fluid from circulating until it warms up. But I really see nothing that would suggest there is some type of built in feature for this.
The hose was not enough for my application, and I required to buy another 6 ft of hose. The hose I purchased from a local automotive store was not as high quality as the hose the came with the kit. The kit hose is thick, less likely to bend/kink from bending, feel more durable, very OEM Acura feeling.
I had installed a trans temp guage and sensor on the output line of the transmission 4month earlier. This was done to guage operating temperature of the trans with only factory cooler and how the new cooler would affect temperatures. Firstly, on the MDX, ambient temperature seems to have the largest effect in temperature. It is not constant. From instance, when driving on the highway on at noon, the guage read 130, by evening when it cools off the temp is down to 100. When it was cold almost freezing, it would only read 90. The highest it got up to with only the factory cooler was 180. This was backing up 3000lb trailer for 10 mins+. After the cooler, was installed, under the same circumstance netted roughly 170.
The real difference in installing the cooler for temp is while driving forward, towing up hill, where temperatures dropped almost 20 given the same grade, outside temperature and speed. So the cooler is doing its job.
Hope this will last the test the time.
And again, get better hose clamps!
