My Star Ratings (with Amazon Ratings in parenthesis):
1 Star (I hate it!) : The lowest score possible. Definitely not worth the money and time and effort! should only use this when the product really does not reflect the product listing. If there are any positives at all to the product or its use, you should not give it 1 star.
2 Stars (I don't like it.): The product is not exactly as described, either appearance-wise or functionally. The product may still be usable but it’s very different to what was described. The product may have a few faults. I'm not a fan of this item as it is no where close to my expectations and I won't order it again, but I can imagine a few others might find it functional as it has at least one positive quality.
3 Stars (It's okay): This item has both positive and negative qualities. I can definitely see some people loving or liking it as it may work for them, but I would likely not purchase in future. While you might think a 3-star score equates to average, 3 stars counts against the product as a negative score. So if you’re not meaning to give it a negative score, rethink your 3-star rating!
4 Stars (I like it): The product is as described and functions well. There may be a few minor issues, but all in all, the product is solid. This item arrived and functions as advertised. I would change a few things about this, but is a good product overall. I would use this item.
5 Stars (I love it!): This item is AWESOME. I will use it and recommend it to others! I just LOVE it! It works as advertised and is an all-around great product. product is amazing! You love it! This is the highest of the highs. If you would recommend it to your friends, family — it’s definitely a 5-star score. Be unbiased here; if the product is exactly as described and meets expectations, but the product isn’t your personal favorite, it could still be 5 stars.

The other reason you might want to use the app rather than your kindle is when you're reading a book with loads of web links. This was the case for me. Your kindle would of course open the links but maybe you want to bookmark the URL or copy paste something from the website into a text file or word document. Don't get me wrong, I love my kindle, but your laptop is sometimes better suited for the job.
I installed this on my macbook pro running MAC OS X El Capitan.
It works like a charm - no problems with the installation, no run time errors or bugs.
The user interface is designed well, it's attractive, intuitive, user friendly and easy to use.
I'm a software engineer so I do keep an eye out for anything of the sort.
I can't vouch for the windows version, but judging by the MAC OS one, it probably work just as well.
This is followed by a series of images showing the various objects that ancient people made from the originally amorphous nugget. And it must be said that throughout the book the images are well-chosen and extremely apt as illustrations of the very points that Grannis makes in the text. Throughout, the author’s tone is friendly and encouraging, often giving the reader pats on the back for arriving at correct conclusions.
He then goes into the question of how these ancient people might produce many of these nuggets and not be dependent on finding them at random. As is usual in these things, this discovery was by accident rather than design. They found that by mixing and firing Malachite with charcoal in an especially hot fire, after the fire was spent and the result cooled (actually froze!), there resulted a solid puddle of copper, bigger than any nugget. They had discovered smelting.
This was to serve them well because as a result they experimented with adding other metals with a high melting point, such as tin, in various proportions. They learned that 15% tin and 85% copper produced a very strong alloy—alloy being a mixture of metals—bronze. This mixture was so useful that an entire age came to be called the Bronze Age (from about 3000 BCE on). The alloy bronze is much stronger than copper and can be used to produce bronze knives and swords that can be sharpened and will hold their edge much longer than those made of copper. The author then goes on to explain why the alloy bronze is stronger than objects made purely of copper, thus introducing the reader to the structure of alloys. In a sequence of subheadings, we read about the Egyptians’ and then the Greek’s use of bronze in the production of weapons, household objects and even works of art.
Grannis then moves from the physical properties of an atom to the structure of the outer ring or shell, which controls chemical changes and the creation of molecules. The author further discusses smelting, the process of removing impurities from iron to produce wrought iron, which could then be heated and hammered into useful objects. Following this is a section outlining the production of charcoal, and the Chinese invention of the blast furnace in the early years of the Common Era. Eventually, in Europe this soon led to the large-scale (or industrial) production of goods, initiating the Industrial Revolution. One of the most important inventions of the Industrial Revolution was the steam engine followed by the invention of the Bessimer converter. The book ends with sections on discoveries of the 19th century, including light metals (such as aluminum), and electricity. A discussion of gold leads the reader to understand that the degree of rarity of a material is correlated with its value: since gold is extremely rare it is extremely expensive.
The final section, entitled “What the Discovery of Metal Teaches Us about Science?” is a wonderful way to end the story. The author narrates the accidental discovery of penicillin: a scientist growing bacteria in a petri dish for experimental purposes found that mold contaminating the bacteria in the dish prevented the bacteria from growing. Instead of angrily throwing the dish away, he wondered if the mold could also prevent bacteria from growing in the human body. It turned out it did. The discovery of penicillin subsequently saved hundreds of millions of lives. In this way the author encourages his readers not to take the world around them for granted but to ask the questions whose answers might lead to important discoveries.
