Make sure there's water in the tank before you turn it on.
I like the unit and it was easy to install. It replaced the same model I bought previously and think it was about 3 years ago or so. The previous unit worked well until a drip started from a hole in the metal cover on the bottom. I got the replacement and installed it, but I'm an engineer so I thought I'd take it apart the old one and find out where the leak was coming from. The leak turned out to be from the gasket holding the heating element to the tank wall. As one can see in the picture, I was surprised to see the heating element completely ruptured for I don't know how long since it continued to work fine and didn't see any discoloration or debris in the hot water. I know the unit is not to be turned on without water in the tank, but suspect that is what happened somehow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Replaced InSinkErator HWT-F1000S
Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2021
Our InSinkErator units have each lasted about 5 years before failing. I decided to try the Waste King, which is less than half the price. It is working well. Check the dimensions before buying to make sure it fits in your cabinet. This unit is deeper than the InSinkErator HWT-F1000S, but I was able to mount it against the side of the cabinet instead of the back, to avoid the sink drain line. I recommend not using the provided quick-connect fitting on the rear inlet, which leaked due to the back pressure. I replaced the existing plastic tubing with 1/4" copper and used 1/4" brass couplings with ferrules. I also used a regular small hose clamp on the center tubing rather than the provided squeeze type.
