All of the people in my radio group are buying these power supplies now. They work great for a mobile base system and for a general bench power supply. If you don't need advanced RF filtering for the lower bands, this is the power supply for you.
UPDATED: It is now February 2018 and this power supply is running flawlessly. It is used every day for base radio operations and the power output has remained solidly at 13.82V. I highly recommend this power supply!
UPDATED: It is now December 2018 and this same supply is still going strong. It gets used each day, often all day, for radio operations. I've recommended this supply to everyone over the years and nobody has had anything but positive experiences with it.
I decided to open one up and take pics of its insides.
This power supply uses the good old Half Bridge topology with voltage doubler and passive secondary rectification, there isn't even passive PFC in this unit, so be aware those living in the EU in case some day the police burst into your home. xd
Line filtering consist of 2 Y caps and one X cap, there's not input varistor..
The bridge rectifier is a GBU808, it isn't heatsinked which could be a problem for 120V operation.
The primary transistors are a pair of D13009K, the manufacturer is unknown to me.
The secondary diodes are a pair of 30100 (That should mean 30A 100V), again the same unknown manufacturer. Hopefully someone knows that.
The primary caps are two 250V 680 uF caps.
Secondary has three 25V 3300 uF caps.
The controller chip is a UTC494.
Solder quality decent, there are some cold solder points.
The transistors and the diodes are mounted to a metal bar that acts as heatsink, there's an isolation layer between the package and the metal bar, there's thermal compound between the transistor/diodes and the isolation layer, and there's no thermal compound between the isolation layer and the metal bar.
The fan is a 14V rated fan, is in series with a KSD9700 (A thermal switch) that's normally open, when the temperature reaches 45°C the switch closes and turns
the fan on. The fan is powered by an auxiliary winding in the transformer.
Now, with the switch closed and no load to the PSU, the fan opearates at 7V, when you load the power supply the duty cycle in the primary increases, which in turn also
increases the auxiliary winding voltage, to 13V with 150W load.
I would personally short the wires of the thermal switch so that the fan is always running, since when running at low loads is pretty quiet anyway.
The efficiency of the PSU is about 60% (Terrible even for a half bridge psu).
Edit: Efficiency is actually 79.6% (and just hits 80% a 240V) while the power factor is 0.63 at 120V and 0.54 at 240V.
