Be sure to prepare for the trans oil cooler thermostat under this tank to break when removing. Order a new one when ordering this tank (for automatic cars).
Do yourself a favor and replace this at 80,000 miles no matter what. Use THIS factory part, not the aftermarket ones. Also, most of the guys on Youtube get under the car to change this. WRONG. You pop the tank mounting latch from the top...replacement is a 30 minute deal. REPLACE the oil cooler expansion tank thermostat at the same time as the tank *IF* you have an automatic.
Love driving my BMW for the last 15 years, but I will never buy another one. I am a car guy, but changing a 81,000 mile head gasket because of foolish cooling system design is just crazy.
When you replace your expansion tank, seriously consider new upper and lower radiator hoses (Rein seem to be good -- NOT Gates) and perhaps a new main thermostat and water pump if yours have 90K miles or more. Also, if you have an automatic transmission, buy a new thermostat that goes at the bottom of the expansion tank since these often break when removing the tank. It's much better to have all the parts on hand when you start a coolant system repair job!
