Pull in watercolorWhen you apply a dry, more saturated stroke in watercolor painting, you can pull from that stroke with just water. This watercolor technique shows form and indicates a light source or edge. Apply a stroke using very little water and more pigment. Before the stroke is dry, take a moderately wet brush and pull the color out from the darker stroke. Depending on how dry that initial stroke is, you can pull the color quite far. |
Learn layering with watercolorsBecause watercolor is a thin medium, you'll need to gradually build the color. Build up your layers from lighter colors to darker colors. When working in layers, let each layer dry before moving on to the next. This takes a little bit of patience, but it's worth it! If the paper is still wet when you apply the next layer, you'll end up with a strange, blendy mess. |
Try the scumbling techniqueScumbling is a technique used to create soft hues of layered pigment and light. You essentially layer the color in soft, indirect layers to create the hue and look you're after. Simply lay in semi-wet strokes of paint in watercolor. As you apply more color, be careful to keep adding water, so the colors blend and stay soft. It can be easy to overwork this, producing a muddy look, so less is more. |
Blend & shade with waterThe ability to blend with watercolor is one of its most powerful assets. The key to blending with watercolor is, well, water! Two common ways to do this are: Create a shape using clear water and add your paint to it; Create a shape using paint, and then use clear water to spread out/fade the paint. |

It's thick enough to take some water (you can make something nice on it with watercolor or acrylic), but it's definitely flimsier than the more expensive, good-quality watercolor paper. The "dimple" pattern in the paper is larger than I'd like; it's got a rather rough texture to it. Higher-grade paper is smoother and denser. But I'm not looking to go broke buying $100 of fancy paper every month, most of it to be wasted by a toddler! I cut each page into quarters for my little ones and thus a pad of this paper lasts us a long time. I am pleased and ordering again.
If you want something basic for your kids that you won't feel devastated about when they waste it, yet that can still produce acceptable works of art, this is the item for you.
