Great for saving our Blueberries from the birds

Great for saving our Blueberries from the birds
I have some very large old blueberry bushes planted close together and so I bought two packages of netting. Thanks to all the great reviews/comments, I knew to plan carefully before trying to put the netting over the bushes to avoid massive snags. (It does snag on everything.) First, I had to lash the two lengths of netting together to make a double-wide swath. ( I bought some plastic fishing net repair needles through Amazon.com for this.) I made a frame with short rebar pounded into the ground and 1/2" wide PVC pipes arched between the rebar. I then used the suggestion of another reviewer to cover the bushes with plastic sheeting first before applying the net. (I bought a painter's plastic sheet for this.) Then, two of us laid out the (now huge) netting on the floor and folded it lengthwise for ease of carrying and placing, and we carefully carried it high, placed it, and unfolded it, on top of the plastic-covered bushes. We then were able to slip the plastic sheeting out by having one person hold the net on the side and the other person pull on the plastic. The netting has worked great at keeping the birds out - I have been able to harvest about 3 times the blueberries I have in past years without the netting. It seems very durable and I plan to put it up again next year. My one very sad regret is that two small birds (sparrow-like) have died by getting stuck in the netting. I didn't find them until they were partially decomposed. Their heads were stuck in the small squares of netting. I feel horrible and need to figure out how to prevent this from happening again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works fabulously - just don't catch any snakes like I did
Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2015
Love the product and have recommended it already to many of my friends.

It use this bird netting to cover my young blueberry bushes. It works perfectly. Not even the two storms we have had since it installed the netting, blew it off. I am very happy with this product.

However, special attention should be given to how you place the sections, which hang over your frame. I did it wrong. I merely stretched the net over my lattice fence elements and left it at that. I certainly did not want to trim off pieces; after all, I hope that the berry bushes will grow taller.

Unfortunately a black racer snake must have decided to take the “shortcut through the netting”, and wiggled herself more and more into the netting. She strangled herself. I regret this because these snakes are excellent natural pest control, they hunt mice.

Having learned from this I now roll up the extra netting material so that is not going to happen again. Besides that it is sad that the snake strangled herself, it is also really unpleasant, discovering a 4 foot dead snake in the morning, especially when one is still a little tired and does not recognize that the snake is dead, after first glance.
