Product Description
If you can make oatmeal, you can make beer. Brooklyn Brew Shop's
kitchen-friendly Beer Making Kits makes brewing easy by using only fresh, whole ingredients and traditional methods used in homes and breweries for centuries. By brewing with the same ingredients (malted barley, hops, and yeast) that the best craft breweries in the world use, making high quality and complex beers becomes possible on the stovetop in your very own kitchen, big or small.
Decadent and delicious, our Chocolate Maple Porter gets its dark chocolate flavor from a handful of Chocolate Malt. Think of this beer like a grown up version of hot chocolate. Thick, rich, creamy and a tad sweet, the addition of maple syrup at the end of the boil makes this beer a true indulgence.

Also, remember when you take the temperature NOT to let the thermometer touch the sides or bottom of the pot. This will give you an inaccurate temperature as you will essentially be taking the temperature of the sides of the pot instead of the contents. You will need to hold it in the middle of the mash/wort (don't just drop it into the pot).
The kit works well in a small apartment (I am in college, and was able to make the kit in my galley-style kitchen).
I'm drinking my first batch today. If you like an IPA, it is great! Just note that India Pale Ales have elevated hop contents, as they were originally developed to be brewed in England and then shipped to occupied India, so the flavors were boosted so they wouldn't be lost on the long journey at sea. If you don't like a lot of bitterness, I would recommend you choose a different kit by Brooklyn Brew Shop. If you are expecting a generic 'Beer' like one of the mass-produced varieties, this kit is not what you are looking for. No judgment if that's what you prefer, but that's not what this kit gives you. In fact, if that is what you are looking for, I probably wouldn't recommend any of Brooklyn Brew's products. These folks create kits for brewing specific varieties of beer based on specific historic and current brewing styles, as well as some of their own inspiration. If you are just looking to get drunk on something generic, you will save yourself a lot of time and effort by just going to the store and buying your favorite brand. If you are looking to enjoy a flavorful beer with a specific character (that you yourself brewed), then this kit is for you.
Overall, the folks at Brooklyn Brew Shop have put together a kit with all of the somewhat obscure supplies you need for brewing beer. The rest of the items are either common kitchen items or are available fairly easily. They have put together a kit which not only gets you started, but also sets you up to continue brewing for a while.
Now the kit is nice because it comes with most of the stuff you'll probably need (fermenter, ingredients like the grain and hops, glass thermometer, etc.). It does, however, assume you have a few kitchen items already, but I'll get to that in a sec. Overall the process was a pretty easy one. I think I was extra careful because it was my first time doing it, so I spent extra time making sure everything was sanitized thoroughly and that the temperature of all the items were as exactly stated in the recipe. Overall: Easy to do. Estimated cooking time is about 2 hours, so make sure you have at least 3 hours ready for this kit.
It's not to say that it was all "easy to do". The hard part came when I realized that some of the kitchen items I should have already had on hand were not on hand. Specifically the fine mesh strainer I was using was roughly 6-8 inches across and maybe 3-4 inches deep. This will not hold all of the grain for when you're making your wort. I had to do this part in batches and only having one larger (over 6 quarts) stockpot made it even more difficult. When you start with this kit specifically, I would recommend having:
- 1x stockpot that can hold at least 6 quarts of water (2 quarts of water and the whole bag of grain)
- 1x stockpot that can hold at least 4 quarts of water (they make you boil water for making the wort)
- 1x stockpot that can hold at least 6 quarts of water (for when you pour the hot water over the grain in the strainer and how you collect the grain for the first time)
- 1x large fine mesh strainer at least 9 inches across
- Something to store and measure a gallon of water (for sterilizing stuff)
So it has to do its thing for two weeks. I'll be back on the 3rd of February with more info on how the beer actually turned out.
