Better results than expected!
Of course it's been mentioned a thousand times, but I want to say this right away. The secret to success with this is to CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN and then clean your parts again!I tried applying this with cotton balls as recommended all over YouTube with minimal success. After experimenting with rayon, flannel, old t-shirt and nylon, I got the best results by using a little bit of a grey scrubbing pad torn off and wadded up. Not this brand, but the same thing: https://www.amazon.com/3M-37448-Ultra-Fine-Hand/dp/B00HSCNVM2/ All you need is a little bit about the size of a cotton ball. It helps if the part is warm after the last rinse in hot water, and you don't need to dry it off completely. Just keep rubbing it down gently with the scrub pad, over and over, keeping the part wet with solution for a couple of minutes. If your parts begin to flash rust while you are working on other parts, just keep going. It will turn out just fine as long as the rust will easily wipe away with a glove covered finger. It works well on sandblasted parts if all you need is a semi-decorative coating that will hold on to oil, and makes parts with a little more care given to the finish look great. It will make 1018 steel black, and 4140 will have a blue/purple/black very thin finish like it's been heat treated and oiled. I haven't tried it on any other steel grades.I included a picture of a clamp made from 1018 cold rolled steel which was sandblasted before using this, the washer sitting on it is made from 4140 bar stock, they are heavily oiled. The handle on the old band saw that looks like a cheap flashlight is made from 1018 cold rolled, blued with this and was waxed with SC Johnson paste wax, which gave it an anodized aluminum look (The light spots on the handle are lint from the shop towel used to buff out the wax). All parts were degreased with an industrial degreaser and final washed with Dawn dish liquid prior to bluing with no drying step after final rinse in HOT water. All parts had bluing applied with the above mentioned scrub pad.

4.0 out of 5 stars I don't like the bottle cap.
Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2019
I love this stuff. Instantly turns steel black, very black. Steel can have light surface rust and not be perfectly clean and it still works pretty well. The metal can be buffed with steel wool or a brass brush and the black does not come off. A very little goes a long way and this stuff is pretty expensive. I took off a star because the bottle cap has a cardboard circle glued into the top. On the very first day I used this stuff, the cardboard bottle cap gasket was soaking wet and fell out of the cap. You can see where a dot of glue was supposed to be holding this into the plastic cap. This seriously makes no sense. This substance is an acid that eats through various materials including paper and cardboard, so why would they think a cardboard circle in the cap that is going to be in constant contact with acid would stay in place? Now every time I take off the cap, the cardboard falls out and I have to touch this acid soaked gasket and put in back into the cap. I should just throw it away but the manufacturer of the bottle glued it in there for a reason - is the acid now going to leak out or dry up without this?
