Perfect for fishing rods.
5 Stars
Perfect for fishing rods.
I imagine you can carry a lot of conduit with this, but I am using it for fishing rods. My longest rods are 7' and with the 6" PVC I can leave the reels attached. A few words about why I like this one from Reece and then a couple of install tips...This kit comes with everything you need to install the end caps and the U-bolts to fasten it to your rack. It looks like quality stainless steel for the U-bolts and a baked-on finish on the aluminium end cap and door. I'm installing it on a car-top rack so I positioned it with the door opening up. It stays in that position for loading/unloading. If you have room you could have it open to the side or down. The spring-loaded latch keeps a good seal on the door and the latch tension is adjustable. The hole for adding a lock is big enough for the largest padlocks.Installing:It comes with 8 screws, 4 for each end. As mentioned in the instructions, you can use rivets instead and I did. 1/2" grip and 5/32" diameter works. I had some 3/16" rivets on hand and they would have worked with minimal drilling. I just didn't like the idea that a thief was only four screws away from my rods and reels. On the door, I put the rivets from the inside-out so the smooth side would face my hand when loading. I put some chrome screw caps (found at motorcycle or auto shops) on the rivets with silicone to dress it up.Using Schedule 40 6" PVC pipe there was just a little extra wiggle room for the caps. I wraped a 1/2" strip of duct tape around the pipe about two times for a snug fit before putting the caps on and drilling the rivet holes. A thin bead fo silicone seal around the edge and it's water-tight.Each cap has a neat square molded in where you can add contact information. I used an old electric etching tool to write my driver's licence number. Hopefully that will be a further theft deterrent.I used 8-1/2" of the 10" PVC pipe. My longest rods are 7" and I could have used around 7' 8" for the pipe, staggering the four rod/reels in the door end. With the extra length, I can put four more reels in backwards for a, snug, total of eight.Lastly, I had considered making a rod holder using outdoor-rated wood and hardware. When adding up the cost I found this solution was only 10% to 20% higher cost, more weather resistant and a whole lot less work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value and simple setup for holding fishing rods
Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2021
Installation was straightforward. Since I had a cargo basket mounted to the roof, my pvc pipe had to go on top of it. This required I extend the length of the u-bolts by buying a threaded rod, cutting it down to 8 3” pieces, filing them using a metal file and then threading the u-bolt with the newly cut 3” threaded pole. Additionally, the metal bracket to connect the u-bolts wasn’t long enough either so I bought 4 10” stainless steel mending plates and enlarged the holes to allow for the 3/8 threaded rod to go through. I used schedule 35 pvc pipe and made it work, but schedule 40 or even 80 I’d going to be better. I filled the gap between pipe and cap with all purpose silicone to keep all the contents dry. This project took way longer than should’ve, but I did it on my own using the tools I already had. Very happy with the end product.
