Although the grill is small, the cooking surface is generous for its size. The ignition is battery operated and works like a charm. The single-dial temperature setting is clearly marked and easy to use.
My first grilling experience was two good size steaks, and there was plenty of room for more food if I was so inclined. I achieved great grill marks on the meat from the grilling surface, and there was no flare-up of flames. The meat was juicy and perfectly cooked.
There are a lot of parts to the grill, so be prepared for a good deal of assembly. Be patient because the grill is definitely worth the price.
In the end, its a great little infrared grill that does not use up too much propane. The grilling comes out nice and even. It will heat up real high to get a nice char. I removed that little upper resting grill thingy because it took up too much real estate on the already limited space grill. I do wish it was a bit bigger... but that's my fault for buying one that I knew was this small. I'd buy it again if I was in need.
However, I have a couple comments about assembly and directions.
I found it really strange that the directions had no mention of the types of tools necessary for assembly. I only needed a screwdriver and two different sized wrenches, but it would have been nice to find it listed instead of having to guess.
Then there is this little hole on the back of the grill. It has a little flap you can rotate so it is open or closed. I have no idea what that's all about, and found no mention of it in the documentation. Attached to the little flap, there is a chain with a piece of wire at the end. Again, I found no picture or mention of it and have no idea what I'm supposed to do with it.
I've seen reviews about the igniter not working very well, or lasting very long. I can see why. The igniter wire plugs in directly above the grease dripping tray. As a matter of fact, I took it apart a couple times to try and thread it a different way so the wire wouldn't just lay in the tray of grease. I was able to accomplish that, but I am sure it will become a greasy mess before very long just because of its proximity to the grease. Sure seems like there would be a better way to locate that little sucker.
When all was said and done, it took about an hour for me to assemble. If you've ever assembled a grill, you will have no problems putting this little gem together.
Tonight we will fire it up and then the true test.
Ok, so I forgot to push submit yesterday, so now I'll add a few more comments.
Hooked up the propane tank and fired up the grill last night. Another observation about the location of that little grease catcher tray. It is VERY close to the top of the propane tank, so turning off the propane when I was finished required close attention so I didn't burn myself.
The grilling experience itself was awesome. I seasoned the grate as recommended and threw on a bunch of chicken that had been marinating all day. Cooked evenly across the entire surface, and I was pleased with the results. Even though the marinade made a mess, cleanup wasn't terrible either.
So far, I'm really pleased with this purchase.
