The only other item that I would compare it to cost $25.00 and only a fool in my opinion would choose that over this. If my item broke 4x I'd still be ahead compared to the $25.00 cost of the "premium metal" version. Just my opinion as always- if you agree/disagree please click helpful since you've read this far :)
I was a little nervous at first glance because it looks and feels a little flimsy, but I've threaded 45 bobbins with white and black thread, and have made three outfits for the grandkids without any problems.
THE PROBLEM LIES WITH THIS PARTICULAR THREAD HOLDER. It's made of super lightweight plastic which was not 'cleaned up' so well at the factory - meaning there are many ways to snag your thread. Also, the entire holder sways around & sometimes even tips over. As another reviewer noted - I was shocked at the poor quality.
Don't repeat my mistake. I wish I'd have known before I bought this Stand, but there were no reviews detailing this issue. Save your money and, for not much more, buy a nice metal thread holder. It's worth it. I've had my holder for 10 month and the problems I've described are escalating. I assume a metal one will last you a lifetime - certainly longer than 1 year. Once I find & test one I'll review the same.
There's a tiny screw in the base that you have to unscrew before sticking in the plastic pole, then you have to tighten the screw to keep the pole in place. The screw has a square head rather than a normal screw head, and it's so tiny, none of our screwdriver tips would fit it.. When that failed, I tried an allen wrench, also would not work. My husband kept trying different screwdrivers, nothing would work. We finally found a very tiny flat head screwdriver that was able to turn the screw.. 45 minutes later, I finally had the thing assembled. If it weren't for that screw, it would have gone together in a few minutes.
I bought this for my spare sewing machine. My other machine has a cone thread holder with a metal pole, which is MUCH better... If I had to do it again, I would spend the extra for a good cone thread holder... As I said, this is a better than nothing product, but honestly, I think Dritz probably spent more on the packaging of this product than the product itself...
