Product Description
The EmberLit Stove "Original" weighs less than 11.3 oz. (320 g) and is constructed of rugged 304 stainless steel. When you compare that to a full canister of fuel and burner, the difference in weight is astounding! The stainless steel EmberLit is impervious to corrosion and is remarkably strong. This camping or backpacking stove will hold the weight of any pot or pan that will sit securely without wobble. Like the rest of the EmberLit line, this wood burning stove comes with a lifetime guarantee because you are never going to wear it out. With use, the individual panels that make up the EmberLit may take on a slight warp. This is normal and doesn't affect the assembly or durability of the stove. Great for backyard s'mores, camping, backpacking, canoeing, motorcycle/bicycle touring, river running, bush crafting, wilderness survival, and disaster preparation. Made in the USA.

It takes separate parts that are strong, but not individually hugely strong.

Right out of the package, I was pleased with this stove. It was very easy to set up, though sliding the last panel into place after the baseplate is in takes a bit of pressure. Unlike prior reviews suggest, it did not come with a weak cloth bag, but rather with what appears to be a heavy-duty plastic envelope with a button closure. If that tears or wears out, this thing will fit in a Ziplock bag. The baseplate keeps your wood about 3/4 inch off the ground, so the ground will get hot, but not catch fire easily. Once the thing is set up, the two crossbars just lay on top and they stay in place nicely, but are easy to remove. The stove is very sturdy, even with the cross-bars off.
My son and I field-tested the stove on a camping trip this weekend. As others suggested, we put big sticks in the bottom and tinder on top, using some cat-tail fluff on top, then my son got it lit with a ferrorod and striker. A match or lighter would make it even faster. Due to the reflective properties of the metal, the inside of the stove gets very hot and keeps the wood burning well. However, the wood burns down very fast so you have to have some sticks on hand to feed through the hole in the side. The side port is small so it's really going to be twigs, but if you have enough you can cook for as long as you want. In a strong wind you might need a windscreen, but all the sides are solid so we didn't find we needed one at all, even when the wind kicked up. It took about 10 minutes to boil a quart of water, and since the stove was very hot after that, the next quart went faster. After cooking was done, the stove broke down easily. Of course there is some soot deposition but not as much as I expected. All in all this was a fun stove to use, very easy to set up, and very strong. It's not terribly heavy for its size but if weight is an issue, you might want the titanium version. I was happy with the solid construction of the stainless steel.
Portable: -No better way to put it.
-How many other stoves can you disassemble and put in your - Pant pocket/bag/backpack/jacket/day hike bag/cooler/backpacking backpack? It comes with a case to keep the soot from coming into contact with yourself/items in bag.
-Folds flat as promised, incredibly thin (so much so, it took me back holding it, and I thought to myself "and you can really cook with this thing?").
-Did I mention you don't need to pack your fuel! Just grab sticks/grass/pine cones as you walk on your hike/trail/in your yard. So all you're paying for is the stove, baring matches/fire strike/other lighting method cost.
Stainless steel: -Talk about awesome option, for those of us that live in areas where it rains. This model (I've not tried out the titanium) feels stout and can hold good weight (I don't own a Dutch oven, yet, but it could handle it).
-DON'T BE AFRAID! The stove looks nice when you first get it, but after use, it will change to rainbow and soot colors (which just means you're using it!). Use baking soda and vinegar to get majority of soot off.
Ease of use: -Ever tied your shoes? Put a puzzle together? No different with this stove!
-Fits together nicely and tightly. Make sure to put in good flammable tinder to get hot, then start putting in thin sticks through the opening in the front, working up to larger diameter sticks (essentially when you have enough coals to light/sustain larger pieces of wood.) If you need a good tutorial, go onto U-tube and the founder has a good line of videos to get you set.
Design: -This caught my eye right away. The stove is like a mini ziggurat of Mesopotamia (pyramid with flat top). This accounts for the stability, as opposed to competitors who use a box/rectangle structure. This stove does not want to topple over!
***As others have said, make sure to take OFF the clear plastic shipping covers on each panel (it keeps the panels looking pretty prior to using the stove), when you first get it, or you'll be burning plastic (and breathing in plastic fumes :( ).***
I've been using this stove, and it not only cooks well (and smokeless, if you do it right) but it radiates heat because of it's steel make (I've heard titanium heats up fast, but also cools fast too, but to be fair, I have not used one yet.).
CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THIS STOVE!
I can see it lasting the lifetime guarantee the maker gives it!
