Customers are satisfied with the performance of the soil. They mention that it is very workable, neutral, and easy to use bedding for plants and invertebrates. Some say that the product has a very pleasant, fresh smell after adding it to their tank. Some customers also mention that the soil works great in arachnid terrariums, turtle/tortoise enclosures, and all species. However, some customers have reported that the clay bricks can get moldy if they are kept wet for too long.

"This stuff is unbelievable. I added it as a top dressing to my houseplants and they are already responding. And it's winter...." Read more

"...It's amazing. My little corn snake also loves to burrow in it, and even dry it holds her tunnels' shapes fairly well...." Read more

"Works pretty well, however, there are some weird items occasionally inside the package of materials." Read more

"...I have had much better success with rooting cuttings. This product has many uses, works great, is low cost, and easy to use. Easy 5 Stars...." Read more

118 customers mention82 positive36 negative

Customers are mixed about the quality of the soil. Some mention it's a decent substrate and expands in water to become a very fine mulch. They also say it consistently delivers high quality coconut fiber at a fraction of the cost. However, others say that the quality has gone downhill, it'll shed and stick on bricks, and it'd be an unusable waste of money.

"...It consistently delivers high quality coconut fiber at a fraction of the cost that the bagged fiber's price...." Read more

"Good product" Read more

"...First off, it's quality has gone downhill. This used to puff right up when it's soaked in water leaving a nice range of substrate textures...." Read more

"...Feels almost like dirt, but doesn't stick to my tortoise nor has it remained as wet as it first was (which is for the best)...." Read more

52 customers mention18 positive34 negative

Customers are mixed about the absorbency of the soil. Some mention that each block absorbs a lot of water, retains water extremely well, and is easy to hydrate. However, others say that the blocks sat in water and hardly absorbed water after an hour.

"...less than the package recommended to soak it in, it still took a long time to dry back out...." Read more

"...three bricks which are easy to separate and which rehydrate in a matter of minutes so they're ready to go quickly...." Read more

"...Now it gets wet but doesnt absorb the water. There are even chunks that stay hardened like little stones...." Read more

"...These bricks were completely nonabsorbent, even after hours left sitting in water...." Read more

36 customers mention14 positive22 negative

Customers are mixed about the expansion of the soil. Some mention that it expands incredibly, fast, and enough to fill the base of an 18x18x24 terrarium. However, others say that it didn't expand at all, took forever to expand, and was tedious to get the soil to expand.

"...that might help with surface area access, but the substrate never actually expanded - the chunks stayed the same size and hardness, just wet...." Read more

"...They expand in water and become a very fine mulch, that is then perfect for mixing in sand. The bricks expand into both saw-dust and fibrous pieces...." Read more

"...water like we have with every other one that we have bought and it never expanded...." Read more

"...It was good after that, but it wasn’t quick." Read more

35 customers mention24 positive11 negative

Customers are mixed about the ease of use of the soil. Some mention it's very easy to use, simple, and easy to set up. The instructions are perfect. However, others say that it took a while as it was very hard to work with, time consuming, and messy to get set up, and that the instructions were perfect.

"...This product has many uses, works great, is low cost, and easy to use. Easy 5 Stars. I will be using this from now on in my terrarium." Read more

"...brand compared to the eco-earth or Zoo Meds, is that it is much less messier to make...." Read more

"...Breaking it apart speeds up the process but is tough to do, help to wet it and work it by hand in a large bucket. Expands a lot!..." Read more

"Fun to use, easy to use, great price, and my reptiles and amphibians love it. Definitely will continue to purchase for them." Read more

The stuff is so well packaged that I should have only bought one box instead of two. However, I will definitely be using the rest eventually. It has no odor and is the perfect vivarium soil for my snake enclosure. Price-wise it's unbeatable and the shipping was 2 days from order to delivery!
