Has run from 7pm to 10am weekdays and all day on weekends for a month. Still blowing ice-cold air. Good remote & features - not feature rich but has more options than I need. After much research and managing my expectations, I bought this to cool my 300 sq ft room, which it does well, and I'm very pleased with the results.
Full-blast it draws 1kW. Without condenser, around 150W. Ran me about 250kW/hrs for a mild Oklahoma June, cooling JUST my 2nd-floor bedroom without any other A/C. Moves a lot of air so a bit loud but not hardware sound, just air. It's bigger and heavier than it looks in pictures. Read the physical specs.
Install it properly and it works well (hasty installation - 15min, perfectionist with sealant and insulation - 1hr). But educate yourself on how these work and manage your expectations. It's not magic. This won't turn your entire house into an ice palace in just a couple hours. It's rated for basically one room. And if it's 95F outside and 85F in your room, don't expect to reach 75F for a few hours. It gets to 80F pretty quick though. Hot air is pushed out. So air from somewhere else has to come in. I knew what to expect and got better results than I had anticipated.
The criticism I'd offer is to the window kit itself. I have 2 windows it could install in but the kit didn't fit either without some modification. Plan to cut a bit of thin plastic and perhaps work with some kind of externally sourced plastic sheeting and tape or sealant to get a clean, professional quality, and air-tight installation.
This product design on the Global Air 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Cooling should be outlawed. The intake sucks air from inside the room you are cooling (and by extension, the rest of your house) and exhausts hot air out the window through a hose. This creates a negative pressure inside the room you're cooling, forcing hot air to be pulled into your house from outside through cracks in your window seams, laundry room vent, wall outlet covers, doors, etc etc.
What makes this particular unit outrageously inefficient on top of that is that when the compressor turns off, the fan continues to run, which in turn continues to vent the air you just cooled out the window (I am sure of this - I went outside and held my hand over the exhaust - it was blowing cold air outside).
This could easily be remedied in two ways. They could design a second hose connection from outdoors to be used as an intake. Depending on the size of the room and how hot it actually is outside, 10,000 BTUs should be enough to cool the space you want to. At the very least they could make it so the fan shuts off when the compressor shuts off to prevent all the cool air being sucked out the window.
This constitutes 90% of what's wrong with the unit. So if this is a deal breaker for you, read no further, just don't buy it. If you're just cooling a space down for a very short period of time (just a few weeks) or it's just a garage or something like that, then read on.
Overall Rating (for long term, efficient use): 1 / 5 stars
Part 2:
After 1.5 years of use, I replaced this Global Air 10,000 BTU with a Whynter 14,000 BTU unit that is "dual hose" (available on Amazon). The rest of this review will be comparing the two.
Noise level (1 / 5 stars): The Global Air 10k BTU unit is about 20% louder overall than the Whynter 14k BTU unit with the compressor running on both. With just the fan running on both, the Global Air unit is 30 - 40% louder than the Whynter unit. So the smaller, lower BTU unit is louder for no apparent reason. To add insult to injury, less than a year after purchasing the Global Air unit, the fan started making a moderately loud squealing noise. It was tolerable because the squealing would stop after a few minutes (for the rest of the day. Even in optimal conditions before the squealing started, the Global Air 10k BTU portable AC was somewhat oppressively loud, even though I was only using it during waking hours.
Raw Electricity usage (2 / 5 stars): Overall, the Global Air 10k BTU portable AC has mediocre power usage compared to the Whynter 14k BTU unit. I'm rating this section so poorly because of how incredibly inefficient the fan is at the lowest speed is. On the lowest fan setting the Global Air unit draws about 170 watts, compared to the Whynter unit at just 50 watts. With the compressor running, the Global Air unit draws around 870 watts, compared to the Whynter unit at 1000 watts.
Raw Cooling Power (3 / 5 stars): The Global Air 10k BTU portable AC has pretty good cooling power. I could fire that thing up on a very hot Phoenix summer day and it would cool my office down very quickly. So in terms of raw cooling power, that was pretty good. Of course, that wasn't very helpful when the compressor would have to kick back on again in just a couple minutes because it was blowing all the cool air outside. Compared to the Whynter unit, they both cool down my office in roughly the same amount of time. Of course due to the nature of the intake / exhaust system on the Whynter unit, my office stays cooler much longer.
Retail Price: My rating on this greatly depends on what you plan to use it for. If you're going to use it to cool a space for a short period of time (less than a month) or use it as an emergency backup, I'd give the unit 3 / 5 stars. It's one of the cheaper portable ACs out there and will get the job done in a pinch. In that use case, I still can't give it more than 3 stars since money is just blowing out the window whenever it's on. If you're looking for something reasonably efficient, this unit gets 1 / 5 stars for the reasoning in the rest of my review. It's just absurdly inefficient overall, so any money you save in the short term will be completely eclipsed in the medium / long term.
Conclusion:
If you're looking for something that's going to be reasonably efficient, pay a little extra money and get something that has dual hoses (sometimes called 'dual pipe'). I have central AC in my house and work from home. I bought a portable AC because I only needed to cool down my smallish home office during the day while my wife is at work, which saves a ton of electricity because I'm cooling down a 300 - 500 sqft office instead of an entire 1800 sqft house in the middle of 105 - 120 ° F summer heat. The Global Air 10k BTU portable AC is the antithesis of the goal of energy efficiency.
PS: What would be even more efficient would be a window AC, which takes care of the intake / exhaust outside of the building. I was unable to continue using my window AC due to my home owners association. If you have no HOA or the room you're cooling is not visible from the road, I'd recommend a window AC over a portable AC in general.
