I’ve seen a lot of reviews claiming that Instant Ink is a scam, but few detailed reasons as to why. I believe the terms are very clearly defined. I’ve been tracking my paper use (77 pages per month average) and ink expense ($120+ per year). Based on my usage, I personally believe Instant Ink will save me the claimed 50% on ink.
Printer:
By comparison, the HP Office Jet Pro 8720 is larger than my old all in one printer (a Canon Pixma 882) but the new features are great. The 8720 is considerably faster at printing black/white and color. The 8720 comes with a unique email address that you can send documents to from your smartphone or tablet. Both iOS and Android also have apps that you can use to print directly from a smartphone or tablet if you are concerned about email. I found it very easy to install the initial ink cartridges and I'm used to the pressure locking cartridges that HP has started using (vice the older clamp down style).
Thoughts on Instant Ink savings:
My old printer was a Canon Pixma 882, that printer has 5 ink tanks, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, small black and a large (double sized) black. The best price I have found in getting genuine Canon replacement ink is to buy a large black and the colors combo for $62 and the individual small black for $14.
For the first 2 years that I had my old printer, I was buying ink once a year for around $75. Over the last 6 years, that price has not changed but the frequency of needing to buy ink has caused me to spend $120 to $180 per year. You might think that I’m just printing more.
I have checked my paper purchasing and I have averaged under 100 pages per month for years. However, just to make sure, I’ve noted when I started and finished the last two reams of paper I’ve used. Over the last 12+ month I’ve tracked my paper usage, specifically to determine whether Instant Ink would save me money. My calculated monthly paper usage is 77 pages per month.
Since I average 77 pages per month, I can sign up for the $5 Instant Ink program ($60 year) and save half of my annual ink expense as HP claims. Also, the $5 plan allows for the roll-over of unused pages up to 200 pages. I can expect to bank an average of 20+ pages per month until I hit the 200-page limit. If I have a heavy printing month, my roll-over pages should easily cover it.
Advice:
Before signing up for Instant Ink, make sure you know what your average paper usage is and how much you are spending on ink annually.
Understand how the program works and the limitations of certain plans.
Look for promotional offer codes that will get you free months. My printer came with 3 free months. Then HPs website had a promotion code up for 1 free month. Also, you can get a referral code from a friend that will give each of you a free month. If you don’t have an Instant Ink friend, there are lots of strangers online that have posted their referral codes. Before you complete the registration, you can enter as many “special offer” codes as you want until you get the combination of valid promotion codes you like.
Thoughts regarding claims that Instant Ink is a scam:
First, HP is a company trying to make a profit. Instant Ink is not a program designed to give away an unlimited amount of ink for FREE. They do have a “FREE” ink program, but the overage charge is clear and part of HP’s attempt to make them some money on the free ink plan.
Some of the comments I’ve seen as to why people think Instant Ink is a scam is that they limit the paper use and charge for overages. I do not see anywhere in the program that HP claims that you can have UNLIMITED ink. If they didn’t establish a limit, clearly people would abuse it. Again, they do have a “FREE” ink program for some printers, but it clearly states that it is limited to 15 pages per month and overages have a fee.
Another claim I’ve read is when you start the Instant Ink program, you are retroactively charged for pages printed before starting. I don’t think this claim is factual. My account clearly shows that I have 5 free months of Instant Ink. It clearly states that my free months do not start until I put in my first Instant Ink cartridge. It also clearly states that I should fully use the cartridges that came with the printer before putting in an Instant Ink cartridge.
Yet another scam claim I’ve seen is people complaining that they canceled their Instant Ink plan and the cartridges stopped working. This required that they go buy brand new cartridges before they could use their printer. If HP allowed the use of cartridges associated with Instant Ink after a plan was canceled, I think it is fairly obvious that people would attempt to abuse the Instant Ink program. Start the FREE or cheapest service, receiving the cartridges and then canceling the plan. Use the cartridges for months with no fee or overages, then repeat when the cartridges are empty – start, receive, cancel.
I’ve read in a couple of forums where people are trying to scam the system. Instances of this include, canceling the Instant Ink program after free promotional months end but before being charged the first month; disconnecting the printer from the Internet to attempt to hide printer counts; receiving cartridges then canceling.
With anything, there is always the possibility of issues; I don’t want to disregard that. I have yet to see a way where HP is acting in bad faith, but I’ve seen a number of examples of people taking actions that are borderline abusing the system - I have to find it questionable when they claim it is a scam.
1. Handle a lot of repetetive work, like scanning and copying stacks of documents, so I don't have to place them on the glass one at a time.
2. It holds 150 sheets in the tray, so I don't have to refill it very often. Plus, the paper tray is inside, so don't have to worry about dusty paper if you don't print for a while.
3. The copies/prints shoot back on top of the unit, so none fly away.
4. Easy setup, I read that some people have issues, but my setup only took a few minutes. I just went to the website that pops up on the setup screen, downloaded the software, typed in my wifi password, and I was printing wirelessly from my phone within minutes. I already had the HP print plugin download on my Note 5, so you may need that to easily print from mobile.
Overall I really like it, it looks and feels more like a business printer, which is what I needed. I'll mainly be using it for documents, mostly printing text or colorful presentation documents. It's working great for that. The unit is a bit big though so be prepared for that. It doesn't bother me at all, I prefer it to be large enough to handle all the features I was looking for.

It tells me I need to replace C and Y color before I can continue to print in black and white. I order those, install them THEN it decides to tell me I must also replace the other color now - before I can again print in black (note I hadn't printed a single page between replacing the two it said where empty and it deciding another was also empty.
We have printed a total of 5 color pages (mostly shipping labels it defaulted to color by accident) over the entire time we have had it and that was enough to deplete all 3 colors? I don't think so.
We have replaced the black ink once and at the time I thought it was weird I could hear there was still plenty of ink left in the old one but ignore it thinking it was a weird glitch and just used a new one.
When my last all-in-one printer finally died after several years, I boned up on reviews on current-model all-in-one printers. Other brands were getting better reviews but I wanted to stay with HP. So I chose the 8720. I have not been disappointed! This printer easily prints two-sided copies (which is now my default setting to save paper), is fast and quiet. The sheet feeder works well. It makes quality copies in both black-and-white and color. I do not do the HP ink-cartridge subscription program because I can't figure out how to time it to my unique needs (which are high some months and low during others).
Messag to brick-and-mortar stores: after checking prices, I decided to pick a printer up the same day at Best Buy since I had a deadline to meet. I took four cartridges to swap out for those that fit the new printer. Best Buy would not swap them out. I told them their lousy customer service was the reason that bricks-and-mortar stors were in trouble -- price and customer service (not to mention conveninece of not driving somewhere and finding parking) are the differentiators. I told them to keep their printer, went home and ordered this one from Amazon.
