Now. You know those fancy programmable digital thermostats that allow you to set multiple temps for multiple times over multiple days? Be forewarned, if you use one with a heat pump, anytime they encounter a difference between the actual temperature and the temperature you have set, if it exceeds two degrees, they will engage the emergency heat. Ouch!
So. Even though it may not common knowledge, the way to efficiently use a heat pump system is to set the temperature and basically forget it. Oh I don't mean you should never make small adjustments, but the key word is small. For example, in the winter I turn my heat down to 69 at night and turn it up to 72 during the day. Small but very effective, and comfortable, tweaks.
Consequently, programmable digital thermostats are not really appropriate for use with heat pumps. The really cool IP addressable Nest thermostat is a great example. Hook that sucker up to a heat pump based system, and you should expect a steep jump in your monthly electric nut. Emergency Heat!
My experience with the Honeywell 3100C1002; I had a forty year old Honeywell old school mercury thermostat with the tiny sliding temperature adjustment lever and it just got too hard to read either the actual temperature on the tiny little thermometer or the set temperature. I did a little research, learned about heat pump pros and cons, and ordered this little jewel because it had an illuminated digital display and mirrored the old one feature for feature. As in, fan on/auto, cool, off, heat, emergency heat. Just like the old one.
I read the instructions, flipped the circuit breakers off on the heat and air conditioning, disassembled the old thermostat, labeled the wires as instructed, yanked the old one off the wall, screwed the new back plate to the wall, inserted the batteries, snapped on the face plate and flipped the breakers back on. 20-minutes. Works great.
I do notice that the heat pump cycles on more often but it also runs for a shorter period. The temperature seems more stable.
I give it a solid A+
