I first had a professional electrician install a NEMA 10-50R 50A-125-250V electrical plug in the garage.
The heater has a single bolt thread at the top, to hang from the ceiling. The heater comes with a bracket to install it on the ceiling or on a wall.
I also purchased a Certified Appliance 90-1088 3-Wire Range Cord, 10-Foot, 50A from Amazon.com.
I wired the heater red wire to X (on the plug), black wire to Y (on the plug), and I grounded the heater case to W (on the plug using a green wire).
The heater works great, and moves a lot of air. It is a little noisy, but not unbearable.
It gets the garage quite comfortable.
My garage is about 630 square feet, and this heater can heat up to 750 square feet, so it's actually more than I need.
I figure it won't have to work as hard in a smaller space.
When you set the temperature you want, the heater will retain that setting the next time you turn it on.
The remote control is very handy.
You also have the option to just use the fan, and not the heat at the same time, which would be good in the summer.
It takes about 45 minutes to heat up the garage from a dead cold.
I really like this heater.
The measurement of my garage is17 X 27 with a 10 foot ceiling. It has 2 very large windows, an insulated access door, an insulated double garage door, and oh ya, a large dog door. Let me say I like it warm, and on a 20 degree day this unit does achieve a temperature of 76 degrees easily. I have not pushed it any higher. Note that my garage is heavily insulated on walls and ceiling.
Today, 12/19/19 it is 15 degrees here in Maine and it was colder overnight. I keep the heater set at its lowest temperature of 45 degrees over night ( I wish it would go lower) and it was 47 degrees in there when I walked in this morning about 7.
So at that point I crank it up to about 75 degrees and go back to the house for coffee. With this cold it will take about an hour to get to 75, but it's certainly a suitable working space as the temp goes up.
All in all I'm very satisfied with this unit. Of course everything has some negatives, and I only have a few. The first is the remote control. You cannot hold the up or down button where it would get you where you want to go faster, like your tv volume. you have to click for every degree, up or down. (Hey, this is the 21st century!).
Second is the constant clicking of the unit that takes some getting use to. I assume it clicks when it's going back and forth between phases but it's pretty continuous.
Lastly, I'm not an electrician, and I had to call King's service line to clarify the wiring instructions. That is because the diagram on the inside panel of the unit gives one wiring requirement while the King website wiring diagram says another for this size unit. As it turns out the website was correct and the unit does require an 8/2 wire with a 40 amp 220 breaker.
If I had one wish, since my garage is unattached from my house, it would be that the unit had a built-in clock/timer where 7 days a week could be programmed with the remote to go on and off. It would save me an hour of heat-up time in the morning and a back and forth trip in the cold. Also, sometimes I leave and forget to turn it down, so it would help my electric bill also. Again, it's the 21st century!
My advice is, measure your space carfully considering insulation, windows and doors, and your outside temperatures. Then go for one size larger, it will run less often and warm up quicker.
