I like good (ok maybe great) coffee but I am not a coffee snob. I read some complaints about the buttons (letters did wear off in about 3 months) but that’s why I kept the instructions -it has pics so you know what buttons to use in clean mode, etc. we only brew dark roast coffee so I could care less about brew strength setting- it says on dark. We grind our own and agree on the plain paper filter. The tab for ‘how much coffee in the basket or holds the filter in got tossed right away-again I’m not counting beans in search of the perfect cup. Used it twice and removed it-ok this much in the grinder gets the strength I want.
We both generally make 6 cups of coffee so day to day is no big deal. Wife is challenged with electronics but figured out timer. Does take awhile to brew but if you in a hurry fill the tank with hot water. Speeds the process quite a bit. No leaks or other issues. When family or friends come over it’s always “WOW this IS good coffee”.
So summary:
Simulates pour over method. Yes it does taste better when the temp is perfect and you use this method-not a drip machine.
Aesthetically pleasing.
Very durable-we had gone through a coffee maker ever year for 10 years. This has lasted 16-17 months and is still going strong.
Have I mentioned it makes great coffee?
Keep directions-button labels fade fast.
Oh yeah- it makes GREAT coffee. Price wise and value (if /when it dies) i will buy again.
Strengths: One of only a small handful of coffee makers that meets the demanding standards of the SCAA. It really does make amazing coffee. Would give it 6 stars for that if I could. And it's beautiful. At the intersection of Technology and Art. I'd give it 6 stars for that as well. True, the Bonavita's are great coffee making machines, but did they have to make them so ugly? They have all the aesthetics of Soviet-era factory equipment.
Weaknesses. Maximum volume brewed is 40 oz. That's only makes 6.5 standard (6 oz) cups of coffee. The way they claim it to be an 8 cup coffee maker is by dropping the cup size down to 5 oz. So be warned. Second - amount of coffee it makes when you select a small number of cups to brew various TREMENDOUSLY depending on how much water you put in the reservoir. Asking for 2 cups when the reservoir is filled up to the 3-cup line yields 10 oz of fluid, filling it up to the 8-cup line yields 17 oz. That's a BIG difference. Lastly, the basket for holding grounds is really too small for even their downsized 8 cups. The bloom created during the initial wetting. tends to overflow when "8 cups" are brewed. Using a coarser grind helps prevent this, but KitchenAid really needs to address this issue in R&D. Still, I forgive all these faults because it does make a great cup of coffee. And it's beautiful, to boot.
This coffee maker makes good coffee. But it does not hold up well. I'm on my second coffee maker now in less than a year. I did get a replacement from KitchenAid but the replacement has even bigger issues than the first coffee maker had. The old problem was that the coffee warmer did not keep the coffee hot. So I called KitchenAid and then sent me a new maker. Now with the second maker, the coffee warmer still does not keep the coffee hot (I think this is some sort of design flaw), but now if I put water in the tank, to make coffee later, the water leaks out of the tank into the coffee pot. WTH? I guess I'll try getting in touch with Kitchen Aid again and see if I can get a replacement, but it is quite likely that the warranty is over. I had a Bunn coffee maker that lasted 10 years but didn't make coffee that tasted as good as this coffee maker can make it, but at least it was well worth the money in terms of longevity.
Old rating:
This isn't one of those fancy reviews that talks about water temperature, or how long coffee needs to steep, etc. I don't know about all the science behind making the perfect cup of coffee. What I do know is this, I replaced a Bunn coffee maker that I did love. It was about 8 years old and had started leaking. I did some careful reviews of replacement coffee makers and decided to give this one a try. I'm glad I did.
For me the most important thing is the taste of the coffee. I have a Bodum burr coffee grinder that measures out the perfect amount of ground coffee. I personally love Italian Roast Starbucks coffee and use it. But using both of these was not making a perfect cup of coffee. Every once in a while (average about once every two weeks) I'd get a pot of coffee that was really good. But of course consistency is the key. With my old coffee maker I didn't have any consistency. Now with my new KitchenAid I get the perfect pot of coffee everyday, twice a day. Yes it's true, the coffee is perfect. The is no nasty acidic after taste just a smooth cup of coffee that I enjoy every day. How does this happen? I think it is the combination of measured water coming out of the coffee maker plus, high quality coffee beans, plus measured amount of grounds from my Bodum and of course, the pour over method. Since using this coffee maker I am a true believer in the pour over method. Does it take a little more time, it certainly does. I used to make a pot of coffee in my Bunn in 3 minutes. Now it takes 15 minutes for 8 cups of coffee. But frankly, perhaps that was the Bunn's downfall, making coffee that fast just wastes beans and leads to weaker coffee.
I really love getting my consistently great pot of coffee for over a month now. Its like going to Starbucks. I have to say, I love this coffee pot and I highly recommend it.
Top reviews from other countries
1. When I remove the pot to pour I don't get coffee drips all over the hot plate.
2. When I go to change the grinds I don't find that it's overly difficult to get the filter and grinds in and out of the machine.
3. The coffee is consistently excellent.
Having said all that, I do have a few small gripes.
1. Pouring water into the machine while the sliding cover is 'cool' it also results in a very small area in which to pour and it is very easy to end up with water all over the top of your machine.
2. The fact that you cannot buy a carafe separately is rather -- annoying and I pray daily I won't break mine.
No issues pouring the coffee. (some reviews state having issues... I don't see how).
Easy to clean. Tastes much better than the generic drip unit we had before. Use the auto start feature almost every day.
Metal reusable filter fits great. Just remove the plastic tab that holds the paper filters before inserting it.
