What I LOVE!!~~
The size--I can do my triple loaf recipes without taxing the motor or overflowing the bowl and large triple cookie recipes
The quietness--this is quieter than my older smaller machines
The accessories--The whip is professional big gun quality and material; the hook is spiral, stainless, sexy wonderfulness, the paddle is the same.
The flip up opening for attachments is a nice touch and a nice change from having to unscrew and remove.
I have kept my smaller mixer because sometimes this is too big for some jobs or I should say, more than I need for some jobs. You could use it for smaller jobs but it is nice to have choices when you cook and bake a lot. If I were to have one, this would be it. I had almost given up on Kitchen Aid to have a truly bigger machine but they came through. The 6-7 quart mixers that have come out in the last few years are just not really going to accommodate the bigger batches and certainly the motors don't. This doesn't heat up, doesn't groan, is truly a workhorse and I don't mean a quarter horse, I mean a Clydesdale~~large and graceful and doesn't break a sweat.
Original review:
We purchased this to replace the HD 600 that we gave to a friend. The HD600 has never given us a problem and worked reliably for years.
In comparison, the commercial series mixer has the following advantages:
1. The motor is quieter. We can make bread while our new baby is asleep in the other room without waking her.
2. The motor maintains its speed regardless of the load. Most mixers will slow when you add flour; the KitchenAid's motor controller keeps the motor spinning at the same speed even as you increase the load.
3. The attachments are stainless steel rather than aluminum. This not only means they can be washed in the dishwasher without losing their finish, it means that there is no chance of micronized aluminum entering your food.
Unlike competing mixers for home use (Bosch, Ankarsrum, other KitchenAid mixers), stainless steel is the ONLY material to make contact with the food. There are no plastic coatings to wear off, no plastic adapters to collect unpleasant grime, and no aluminum, which can dissolve on contact with acidic foods and which is not generally considered a good idea to consume.
