Differences (Liftmaster vs Skylink)
--------------------------------------------
Battery: 9-volt vs. 2-CR2032’s
Configure with: keypad vs. DIP switch, slide switch, jumper, and keypad!
PIN entry: Terminate PIN with ‘0’ vs. ‘#’
PIN entry feedback: none vs. audible beep
Another positive difference with the Liftmaster 387 is that the keypad remains active (and illuminated) for a little over 10 seconds after the door begins to move. During that time, any key can be pressed to reverse door travel – similar to the original Genie keypad behavior.
This was a new install and it was very simple; the directions are easy to follow and very accurate. The only thing required involved changing the first dip-switch on the actual opener to the "-" position. Extremely easy and I didn't have to touch any of the other dip-switches (I also had to change the dip-switches on my remotes, but the dip-switches are easy to access and that only took a couple of minutes). The whole thing was set up and installed within 30 minutes and as I said, this was a new install!
It worked perfectly the first time I set it up. Two suggestions: I changed the 9v battery that came with the unit to a name-brand battery and I sprayed some WD-40 along the cover-track of the unit. The unit came with a 9v battery that was already plugged in and was some brand that I had never heard of before. I don't want to have to change the battery too soon, so I switched it for a new brand-name battery. The cover for the unit slides up and down rather than opening with a hinge. The door didn't slide up and down easily so I sprayed a little WD-40 into the track on the actual unit, slid the door up and down a few times, and now it opens and closes easily.
Minor issues when weighed against the convenience of having a wireless keyless pad that works with my very old garage door opener.
What's in the box? In the Amazon box was single box touting a Lift Master 387LM Universal Keypad, as described. Inside the 387 LM box was a plastic bag containing 2 screws, the unit with the cover already on, and the instructions sheet. Took the cover off, and unscrew the battery cover and I found an EVEREADY 9v battery already installed.
My cover stops right where it's supposed to. The keys are backlit in red. So far, unit works like a charm but I just installed it an hour ago. If it loses it's programming or is otherwise faulty as other reviews have reported, I'll update this review.
