Update: I've been using this slicer for a month now. I really, really don't like it. I have to use my thumbs to keep the egg pushed back or it slides forward and gets squished. I usually end up with egg pieces instead of slices no matter how careful I am. I eat a hard boiled egg sandwich every morning so this gets used daily. I've used it on warm and cold eggs. Very, very disappointed. In fact, I just ordered a different slicer. I hope it works better. I am honestly shocked that anyone likes this poorly designed slicer. It's terrible.
Note: Shrooms should be fresh and firm. None of these limp half-dried out things, they'll go smush instead of being sliced cleanly. Also, try it cap up and cap down to see which way works better for your particular shrooms. There is no 'slicing' action, no back-and-forth motion like you'd have with a knife. It's a guillotine and as it gets older and duller, it will tend to crush things instead of cutting them. So watch the sharpness of your blades. If there's slop in the hinge, it will be possible to bring the blades down on the metal of the device and dull them. So you have to be a bit careful.
Also works on firm strawberries, but not soft squishy ones. If you want slices without any chance of crushing the food, use a sharp knife.
Rinse the device as soon as you're done cutting food and you won't have any trouble cleaning it. If you let the food dry on the blades you'll have a tougher time getting it off there. An old toothbrush is helpful for making sure all the bits are out of the grooves of the base.
I happened upon this one: good reviews, dishwasher safe, stainless steel blades and figured it would be a good purchase. Just got it today, in fact. Pot-metal frame, but that's okay since slicing eggs won't exactly test the structural integrity too badly.
A couple of times a week, my wife like to head to the gym or whatever, and will eat rather late. She absolutely loves a good Cobb Salad, so it was time to boil a few eggs. This slicer absolutely destroyed the egg, turning the yolk into mashed-potato mess, and shredding the white almost beyond usability and recognition. Lots of egg was stuck in between the blades that I had to poke out with a knife and brush. Abject failure!
The only reason I am not returning it is I want to see how it works with the aforementioned strawberries and shrooms. In any event, looks like I'm doomed to have two slicers in an already-crowded gadget drawer.
I'm running it through the dishwasher tonight, though, and if there's any damage, it's going straight back to Amazon.
Edit: As bad as this thing is for eggs, it is terrific at slicing mushrooms and strawberries, so it gets an upgrade to three stars. In fact, with shrooms and berries, it gets 5. So I split the difference.
