From the brand

-
Nature's MACE was born from a father-son partnership, making products out of our home's two-car garage.
After leaving his career in the biochemical industry, and with Nicholas just graduating high school, the duo set out to solve a growing problem in our country.
Our mission is focused on moving people away from using toxic pest control products, and promoting the use of safe and effective natural alternatives.
-
-
We have been developing products for over 30 years! After creating a successful bug repellent, I realized the importance of creating natural products that worked in an industry where so few did.
We believe in using natural products that will humanely keep your pest away. We know the dangers of using toxic pesticides which is why we promote the use of natural-based products for healthy agriculture, households, and ecosystems.

Is it safe for use around pets and people?
Yes. Our products are plant-based and generally safe for wildlife, humans, and pets, and on almost any surface. Please use responsibly, always test on a small area to begin. Always follow directions for the best results.
Should I Use Granular or Liquid?
The granular repellents are best for protecting precise areas and for lower-level plant foliage. The granular is easiest to use, but the liquids tend to work better. The liquids are best for larger areas, blanket spraying, and for protecting taller plants.

Enjoy your beautiful and well-protected outdoor area without being repelled yourself!
Most repellents have unpleasant odors, but we do our best to mask those with fresh minty aromas.

3-Prong Repellent TechnologyOur unique formula incorporates fear, scent, and taste-based technology. When properly applied, foraging deer and rabbits move on to less stressful grounds. Our repellents work in all seasons and are weather resistant. They are long-lasting and provide for year-round deer control! It also works to prevent deer rubbing, which can severely damage and kill plants. |
More Active IngredientLeading brands have a fraction of the active ingredient we use that repels unwanted animal browsing. We include more of what really works! The best part about it is it's completely safe for plants. It’s also safe for use around family, pets, and wildlife. |
Fresh Minty Scent Deer Hate!So now you can enjoy the beautiful aroma of nature without being repelled yourself! Although we use ingredients such as garlic and egg, we mask those more unpleasant scents with minty aromas. Pleasant to humans but offensive to deer and rabbits. |

Deer Facts
The average deer can eat up to 7 pounds of food per day. In the U.S, billions of dollars are lost yearly to deer-damaged crops. If an area is plentiful in resources a deer will make it a part of their “home range” or where they live and bed. If left undisturbed, deer can repopulate and stay in that area year after year.
Deer are concentrate selectors, which means that they eat or “cherry-pick” the most nutrient-rich plant parts that are best tasting. This explains why the tops of your plants, blooms, and buds, are eaten whilst the rest of the plant is still intact.
Nature’s MACE Deer and Rabbit Repellent protects against deer and rabbit damage to apple trees, pear trees, lilies, vines, seedlings, flowers, gardens, beds, ornamentals, azaleas, hosta, arborvitae, evergreens, perennials, annuals, roses, tulips, hemlocks, edible crops, and almost all types of vegetation.
Deer leave behind ragged leaves, missing areas, and frequently just stems. Their droppings are like rabbits, shaped in elongated pellet form. Deer are habitual creatures that often feed at night to avoid being seen by people and prey. During these late-night hours, deer eat heavily, which is why you might not see them during the daytime.

Before you buy
The ready-to-use repellents come ready to use, and the concentrates require mixing with water in an application sprayer. Liquids can also be applied using a motorized spray pump or sprinkler system. Clean the sprayer after use to prevent clogging.
Our liquid concentrate repellents are best for larger and more widespread areas, and for middle to upper-level plant protection such as trees and bushes. The concentrates are the best-valued option, as you can make large amounts of ready-to-use spray. Try our granular repellents for lower-level plant protection (plants under 2 feet tall).
This product is designed to repel mainly deer, moose, and elk. It is effective for rabbits, but if you are trying to repel mainly rabbits, try our Rabbit MACE formulas.

Application Tips
Shake the bottle before each use. Spray directly to leaves, stems, flowers, and branches from all angles. Also, apply along the plant’s perimeter. Apply until the plant drips and the leaves are wet. Repeat spraying in 7 days. Thereafter, once per month. Allow 20-30 minutes for the product to dry before watering. Avoid spraying when plants are wet with dew. Re-apply after heavy rainfalls.
On top of applying directly to plants, consider spraying bushes, shrubs, etc. along the perimeter of your yard to discourage deer from entering. In the beginning, apply more heavily and frequently to stop active browsing. Consider spraying during the winter as a preventative measure. You can spray less as there is less foliage and roughly once per month. If you notice deer in the winter, they will likely be back in the spring.
The best time to start spraying is at the beginning of each growing season. After a cold winter deer are eager to eat fresh growth. Pay attention to bird feeders, as the seed may be attracting deer. Be aware of your neighbors potentially feeding deer. Deer may travel through your yard to access an open food source.
To prevent deer rubbing, spray directly to the base of plants and tree trunks. If you live in a heavily deer-populated area you may need to apply more frequently. This repellent is designed to change browsing behavior and train deer to stay away. Always test a small area on the plant before applying on a large scale, as some plant types are sensitive.

OTHER THINGS TO KNOW: The concentrate is a lot less expensive than most of the other competitive products, and I mix it at 10oz./gal (2.5oz./quart) for optimum results. It keeps away rabbits too, as they used to be the critters that would get my plants next to the house. The minty smell is pleasant, but also has the egg base and garlic in it for maximum effectiveness. It is safe for vegetables, but in my opinion it may not be best to spray directly on forming beans, corn, peas, peppers, or other vegetables in case the scent or egg base is absorbed into the edibles. I thought to try "Liquid Fence" or "Deer Out", but Liquid Fence is egg based, smells bad, and not recommended for vegetables, and "Deer Out" is mint based (ok for vegetables), but it may not be effective after rain as reported. But since "Deer Mace" is the best of both of these (eggs, garlic, and mint) and a lot less money, this is the clear choice due to the demonstrated results!
PS. There is little reason why some may say "Liquid Fence" or "Deer Out" is better, since they both have mostly similar ingredients, but the Deer Mace concentrate is less expensive with higher concentrations of active ingredients and better after-rain performance. The suspended solids spray can clog using a trigger sprayer bottle at the higher concentration I use, so I switched to a handheld pressurized sprayer with great results. One may add an extra amount of a liquid dish soap (that contains an anionic surfactant such as sodium lauryl (ether) sulfate, a common ingredient in soaps, shampoos, etc.) for even better dispersion, absorption, and clinginess to plant leaves.
BEST TIP FOR USE: Use this product with a handheld pressurized spray bottle instead of the trigger squeeze bottles. It will clog less, and it works great with the Agricas half gallon hand pump sprayer. They seem to not let me post a picture of this pressurized sprayer, but this works much better than trigger sprayers and has not clogged yet.

I have a one acre cleared lot in the middle of an 11 acre property. I have A LOT of deer.
The smell:
Compared to other products I have used this is the least offensive product in terms of smell. The primary smell upon opening the product was mint, not the sulfur smell that most other products omit. Realizing that made me confident enough to mix in my kitchen.
After applying the product to my affected plants, I could smell the mint in my garden. This to me was not offensive either as I underplant with a lot of varieties that have a mint scent ( Agastache, Nepeta.) in hopes the herds of deer on my property would keep away. I have found that deer are as selective to plants as children are to hidden candy in a pantry stocked with healthy snacks.
Use:
I applied the product as directed on the label. Without looking I believe it’s 8oz of product to a gallon of water. I used a garden sprayer to apply the product. The product was easy to use and did not clog my sprayer. The night the first application, it rained. After it dried I could still faintly smell the mint on the treated plants so I waited a day or two to apply it again.
Conclusion
The proof is in the pictures. I have extensive deer damage. Especially my hydrangea and sedum. You can see from the above photos despite the damage there is a lot of new growth on the plants. This gives me hope that with continued use of the product I may even actually get blooms. More to come as with positive (or negative) results I will be looking to update this review. For now, I can say buy the product with confidence.

No noticeable smell once mixed, applying or after application, but if you spill any of the concentrate or leave a 'run' on the side of the container, you are definitely going to smell it, for weeks if the container is in a garage or otherwise. Disgusting, no, but its definitely not the most pleasant.
Definitely will use again!
It did keep the rabbits away for a few days, until an afternoon Thunderstorm which presumably washed away most of the active ingredients. The rabbits came again, so I re-applied the product to the lawn; they disappeared for a few days and came back, and I sprayed the product again....etc.
This is not totally unexpected me; I did read others' comments before making the purchase. Because only a small area of my lawn needs to be protected from rabbit, and I can afford to reapplying the product periodically, both time-wise and money-wise. But it may be another story if you have a large area that needs the protection.
