I grew up in Webster, NY about 5 miles from Lake Ontario. Snowy, very cold winters! My dad had a fireplace put in the basement of our little ranch house when he had it built. He was an HVAC guy for 40 years and knew in that climate the best place for a fireplace was down below. It kept the basement dry and we had a wonderful family room with knotty pine paneling. When the heavy snow came and we were housebound with no electric, we would hang a blanket over the open stairway, light a nice big fire and camp out there by candlelight playing Monopoly and Scrabble! I’ve had several gas fireplaces but nothing is better than burning wood. Gas always looks the same. Wood is fascinating to watch. My new screen brings back all those wonderful memories of the hours and hours I sat in front of the fire as a kid.
I live in the desert now in the NW corner of San Diego County. I know better than to live where there is lake effect snow and freezing cold anything but beer and Margaritas! But, this winter with the rain and wind it actually got down to the mid 30s at night! So a great fire even works in the desert. Snuggy and you don’t have big heat bills.

It definitely took a little sweat, but I got the back legs off with a hacksaw and now I have a wonderful looking screen with doors that was easily half the price of others I had looked at. And yes, the screen still stands upright without any issue with the back legs missing -- this just caused the screen to lean forward a bit when pressed flat against the fireplace, which is fine because it still has support there (it does not *lean* forward, that's just where the pressure is).
Admittedly, it seems like a weird design when removing the back portion of the legs doesn't seem to hamper the integrity at all. Overall, I'm very pleased.
