He is 5 Yrs Old now, (5 yrs, 8 months on December 29 2014). The batteries still last over 40 minutes. All we do is fully charge them before storage, and fully charge them again before each use. I have never had any issues with this kart at all..NONE!.. My daughter who is 8 was able to use it full throttle since day 1. I did not notice any speed decrement between my 5 yr old and my 8. With my oldest daughter who is 12 (and 85 lbs) , this cart is not so much fun as it is slower for her, and battery gets drained much faster (like 30 - 35 minutes depending if we are using on level ground or small inclines).
This kart is NOT intended for grass, gravel, or anything other than solid ground (I'm not saying it won't move, just wont be as fun and will not last as it only stands about 2 in off the ground) . It is a Kart and hence, has no suspension so the driver feels every bump in the road specially with the hard tires in the back. It does NOT offer a soft ride if the road is not spotless.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE PLAN and budget for at least a GOOD helmet and gloves. This is not a bicycle and a helmet that only covers the top will not be enough. Get a full face helmet! I can tell you I'm glad I did!
Based on MY experience, I REALLY DO recommend this kart. and I urge you, get protective gear!!
Things to have in mind:
1. Break is on the left hand. It will break depending on how much pressure you apply, HOWEVER, the rear tires are meant not to stick to the floor so that it drifts, so if your kid is driving full throttle, and needs to stop, it will not happen. It will start spinning just as if you would apply the e-break to your car going 40MPH. My kid is only 5, and he is not strong enough to put enough pressure on the break to lock the wheels...
2. Kart sits VERY low to the ground!
3. Even when the kart is so low to the ground, it WILL flip over if your kid is going fast enough, slides/drifts, and the tires hit something half drift.
4. DO NOT use this in areas where there is a slight chance of property damage due to the kart sliding too much, crashing, etc.... but more important than this, PLEASE do not let your kid use this kart without supervision where YOU as an ADULT can look out for anything that can be a hazard for your kid.
The below is a link to a youtube video. It was taken yesterday Dec 28th 2014. The video only shows an incline (or decline) part of a 1/4 Mile "walk road" . Here the kart would go as fast as 20+MPH. This is the only accident we have had on this kart. He got a bump which made the kart drift, touched the grass and the front right tire sank and made it flip. Two minutes later he was back on it and used it until the battery would not make the kart go up the hill.
Please refrain yourself from telling me how bad I did on letting my kid drive on a down-hill. This is an ITEM review, not a parenting blog. I would still use this to teach my son how to manouver a kart/car/vehicle going 20mph with full equipment (and have tons of fun) every day and have the risk of this happening, than wait until he is 16ish and 'try to learn on a real car'... we all fell when learning to walk... accidents will happen... just be sure you have this in mind, and pick a site where there is the least danger to the driver like the one on the video.

While a drifter can be great fun at first, my kid is no longer thrilled by it, and it now gets annoyed that he looses control of the kart. He requested for me to change the rear tires to be like the fronts so that it won't drift.. this was back on October. I told him we would need to wait until the ones that came in were gone... but after what happened yesterday, I have changed my mind and am now looking into replacement rear tires to make this a kart instead of a drifter. I guess my kid is more into speed than drift, so it would depend on what your kids likes the most.
