Not sure if I should expect better than this
The item description says that this is both a Ruger and a Umarex, which is confusing. Umarex is simply using the Ruger name under license, so it's hardly a real Ruger. It is made in China. This rifle is pretty heavy. So heavy that my arms eventually get tired and start shaking as I begin to strain, losing so much accuracy that I have to stop shooting. Definitely not a rifle to shoot repeatedly if it's not leaning on some kind of support. As for accuracy, I really don't know how accurate a break-barrel pellet rifle is supposed to be, since this is my very first one, but my impression is that it is not that accurate. At 25ft. distance my shots kept moving about a full inch away from the bullseye in any direction. This was after hundreds of shots. I tried three completely different pellet types made in 3 different countries (china, USA, germany) and they all seemed to work the same. If I wanted to hit a rat at that distance, with a margin of error of 1" in any direction, it would be mighty hard to hit them. The belt clip broke while loading the gun while I was in a rush (see photo). This really needs to be redesigned. As for packaging, it was absolutely atrocious. ZERO padding was added to the box it came in, and the box came in deformed and beat up, looks like UPS dropped it from a great height several times. I wonder if it is slightly damaged? And if so maybe that's why it's not as accurate as other people say? I'll never know. Most people here seem to get better accuracy at 50ft than I get at 25ft...The mounting screws for the scope start coming loose after 10 shots or so, requiring retightening. It also came with a small rusted spot on the barrel (see photo). It's been fun using it, but I just wish it was more accurate than this, sadly I will never know if this level of accuracy is normal or not in this type of gun, even with a scope.A lot of people complain that its very loud despite having a silencer, but the silencer was designed to be quieter to the target, not to the shooter. Even the documentation says "significantly reduces downrange muzzle noise".I would give this a 3.7 star instead of a 4 star if I could.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible accuracy . Will be sending back. Buy the Gamo Whisper Raptor instead
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2020
I am writing this review after purchasing two different air rifles in similar price range. The gamo raptor whisper .177 , and the umarex ruger hunter max .22 .

I first bought the ruger hunter max .22 and when I received it was very displeased with its consistency. For starters , I have the scope maxed out as high in the “up” direction as it can go, and still my shots are a few inches low at 20 yards . But the biggest concern is the fact that the consistency is horrendous. I don’t claim to be the worlds best shot , but I tried standing mounted against a ladder , and prone with a bipod . My photo attached shows 7 shots at 20 yards , while one shot was a bulls eye, you can see the rest were as much as 3” low. I would say on average it shoots a 2.5”-3” diameter group. To me, that is completely unacceptable in an air gun intended for pest control on small rats that are maybe only 3” tall total. I will say, the .22 definitely packs a punch, and easily goes through (2) 1/2” pieces of plywood and buries in a third . I will say the effort to load the gun is pretty high, and it is by far the heaviest pellet gun I have ever felt . I do like the fiber optic iron sights and sling mount , but these things cannot outweighs the terrible accuracy.

Now in comparison, the gamo raptor whisper .177 shoots about 1.25” groups , and that isn’t even my best target so far , just an average for comparison sake. Photo attached . Again shooting at 20 yards , stranding mounting on a ladder . The one high shot you can see In The photo was probably my fault, but even with that fly away, it’s a 1.25” group. If you eliminate that one fly away, the group is probably less that 1”. One nitpick if I had to pick one , was I had the sight pretty much dialed in, and it shifted a bit after 30-40 shots as you can see . This may just be part of the “break in” . And some small adjustments got it right back in line. To be fair , I did switch the scope out for the CV life 4x32 because a bunch of reviews I read of other air guns raved about this sight . I do really like the mill dots on this sight as well. The .177 doesn’t hit quite as hard as the .22 , but I also goes through two pieces of plywood with ease .

Overall, I really wanted the ruger hunter to work out , but I’ll be sending it back. I know this gun isn’t made by ruger, it’s just licensed to umarx , but after my great experience with the ruger 10/22 rim fire rifle I have had for years , I expected more out of a gun with the ruger name on it.
