I first bought the ruger hunter max .22 and when I received it was very displeased with its consistency. For starters , I have the scope maxed out as high in the “up” direction as it can go, and still my shots are a few inches low at 20 yards . But the biggest concern is the fact that the consistency is horrendous. I don’t claim to be the worlds best shot , but I tried standing mounted against a ladder , and prone with a bipod . My photo attached shows 7 shots at 20 yards , while one shot was a bulls eye, you can see the rest were as much as 3” low. I would say on average it shoots a 2.5”-3” diameter group. To me, that is completely unacceptable in an air gun intended for pest control on small rats that are maybe only 3” tall total. I will say, the .22 definitely packs a punch, and easily goes through (2) 1/2” pieces of plywood and buries in a third . I will say the effort to load the gun is pretty high, and it is by far the heaviest pellet gun I have ever felt . I do like the fiber optic iron sights and sling mount , but these things cannot outweighs the terrible accuracy.
Now in comparison, the gamo raptor whisper .177 shoots about 1.25” groups , and that isn’t even my best target so far , just an average for comparison sake. Photo attached . Again shooting at 20 yards , stranding mounting on a ladder . The one high shot you can see In The photo was probably my fault, but even with that fly away, it’s a 1.25” group. If you eliminate that one fly away, the group is probably less that 1”. One nitpick if I had to pick one , was I had the sight pretty much dialed in, and it shifted a bit after 30-40 shots as you can see . This may just be part of the “break in” . And some small adjustments got it right back in line. To be fair , I did switch the scope out for the CV life 4x32 because a bunch of reviews I read of other air guns raved about this sight . I do really like the mill dots on this sight as well. The .177 doesn’t hit quite as hard as the .22 , but I also goes through two pieces of plywood with ease .
Overall, I really wanted the ruger hunter to work out , but I’ll be sending it back. I know this gun isn’t made by ruger, it’s just licensed to umarx , but after my great experience with the ruger 10/22 rim fire rifle I have had for years , I expected more out of a gun with the ruger name on it.
