That noise, now isolated, is actually a testament to the amount of air that is moved through this fan. I use the 12v 6a Adapter Power Supply for LCD Monitor with Power Cord as the power supply to power it, and it has been working great so far. The blower is switched by the same wall switch hooked up to the exhaust fan. Using this power supply, since it is a switched mode one, there is a small delay in turning on the blower; and that's when things get interesting.
As we flipped the switch, the exhaust fan turned on right away and would have the same noise as it did before (it's a low-cost Broan). But as soon as the blower fan started, we could hear a "swish", and the Broan fan is now almost quiet, leaving the blower fan doing all the work. As an engineer, this is easy to understand, since the blower fan has created a very low pressure zone for the Broan exhaust fan, so it is under very little stress. The rated spec of the blower gives about 3 times the airflow of the Broan exhaust fan, and the result is consistent with that.
I tested the air flow from under the closed bathroom door as well, to see what the air flow rate has changed. With the blower fan, it almost feels like there is a gush of air coming in from outside the bathroom. The best part was the "hot shower test". In the past, with only the Broan exhaust fan running, there would still be a lingering mist in the bathroom after a 5-minute (we are green) shower. Now? Nothing. No fogging in the mirror, and if I observed it during the shower, I could see the mist being sucked up at a really high rate. Given that this is a bilge pump, I also have a lot of confidence that the moisture is not going to change its reliability, and it's perfect for the purpose.
Overall, I am extremely happy with the purchase. It solves the air circulation and ventilation problem in our upstairs bathroom AND corridor (yes, it sucks that much air). I recommend it.
The installation of this bilge blower was simple. All you have to do is connect a positive 12v DC source (mine is on a switch) to the red wire, and then connect the black wire to the battery's negative terminal, or another ground source. Then you can run ducting from the unit to a vent, to rid your bilge of gas fumes. In my case, I already had an intake and exhaust cowl for venting the bilge on my boat, but the bilge only vented properly while the boat was underway. I just positioned this blower near the exhaust cowl on my boat..
The unit is constructed of a standard plastic material. It seems to be well made, and under normal conditions, I'm sure it will hold up just fine.
If you find a use for this unit inside of your home (as some reviewers have), you will also need an "AC to DC power converter," which you can find here on Amazon.
Hope this helps.
BUY one of these universal regulated power supplies for $25 or less. http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Regulated-Switching-Computer-Project/dp/B00D7CWSCG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1411779925&sr=8-2&keywords=12v+360+watt+led+power+supply. This is the 12v 30A version. You could probably buy the 10A version but the price difference isn't much. You connect a 16/3 extension cord replacement from Home Depot with its Black (Live), White (Neutral), and Green (Ground) wires to the 110 screws on this power supply. The remaining screws produce 12V positive and negative as labeled. And you can adjust voltage up or down from the 12v produced if you need to. Check these out on YouTube too. If you want to be fancy you can put a switch in 12v line and run it off this power supply or off a battery.
