Product Description

Product Description

Sharpening tools with curved blades can be tricky for even the steadiest hand. If you own a Tormek sharpening system (T-7, T-4, T-3, and SuperGrind), then this jig will make it simple to sharpen your skew chisels with a straight or curved edge, oval section skews, parting tools, beading tools, roughing gouges, straight carving gouges up to 2” wide, and more. The jig consists of a housing and two interchangeable seats – one open, and one closed. This allows it to swivel and be locked down fast at any angle between 0 and 45 degrees, meaning almost any blade can be honed to a razor sharp edge. It’s also reversible, so your skew chisels have symmetrical bevels on both sides. Another important aspect is this is part of the complete Tormek water-cooled sharpening system that will make your entire shop’s worth of tools finely honed, while taking less metal off the tools and bits, increasing longevity. Your tools will love it, and you’ll love your sharp tools.

From the Manufacturer

Tormek SVS-50 Multi-Jig is used for an exact replication of the shape on turning skew chisels with a straight or curved edge. Thanks to a unique design, the jig also copes with oval section skews, as well as for parting and beading tools and roughing gouges. Use this Jig for straight carving gouges up to 2-inches wide, and a maximum width of skews at 1-1/4-inch. This patented jig consists of a housing and two interchangeable seats – one closed, and one open. The seats can swivel and be locked with the screw at any skew angle between 0-and-45 degrees. Skew chisels have symmetrical bevels on both sides. With this jig you mount the tool only once for grinding both the bevels, and by turning the jig upside down, you can grind both of the bevels symmetrically.

Great for roughing gouges, zero stars for skews... (being generous, 2-stars).

Great for roughing gouges, zero stars for skews... (being generous, 2-stars).
If you buy this jig, do yourself a favor -- remove the "closed seat" and just throw it away or you may be tempted to use it to try to sharpen a skew chisel some day, and you'll most likely ruin it. I ruined an oval skew years ago and wrote it off to operator error. Now, I'm pretty sure it wasn't just operator error.According to the instructions, you mount the skew into the jig once, grind one side, "Turn the jig around and sharpen the other side." (It even has pictures). And it goes on [If the bevel isn't even, turn it over and sharpen the fist side again.] Sounds simple. It's not, the damage is done and flipping it over and doing the first side again won't help.My brand new 3/4-inch flat skew looked like it was sitting perfectly in the jig when I began to sharpen it. I've attached a picture looking down on it from the top after sharpening with the SVS-50. (Hmmm. Now what?) The problem is, the jig cannot mount the skew chisel equidistant between the front and back sides of the jig, even if you're aware of the problem and verify it with calipers. You will most likely end up with one bevel longer and less steep than the other side. (Oh, and you'll spend and hour+ re-shaping your skew instead of merely sharpening it). Using calipers, I tried to make a 1-inch oval skew sit exactly equidistant in the saddle of this jig. The best I could get was off by a good 2/16ths of an inch!Bottom line: Tromek T7 is a great sharpening system and, I feel, safer than a typical bench grinder. However, sharpen your skews and parting tools some other way. (Maybe free-hand with the Tormek Tool Rest? Or the old Scary Sharp way). Keep the "open seat" for this jig however -- it's great for roughing gouges. And if you're looking for something that works nicely with bowl and spindle gouges, the SVD-185 is your jig.
