- Mating the shelving units together vertically by use of the middle shelf is a little hinky. However, I found that by working carefully and in a well-lit space, I was able to get the uprights to align correctly with a bit of practice. Snugging the rivets down by hand or with a light tap of the rubber mallet, then aligning the uprights before fully seating the rivets does the trick. Allowing the uprights to overlap does NOT. Any overlap walks unevenness in the slot spacing up the shelf, resulting in wobbliness and bent shelf supports.
- The horizontal shelf supports are somewhat prone to bending. However, again... in a well-lit space, it's easy to ensure that the rivets are seated in their slots before whacking away with the mallet. If they're not seated, you'll bend the support. Easily fixed if you catch it early; just flip it around and use it on the other side.
- The particle board shelves are indeed a bit thin. Think of your application. If you're intending to put these shelves in a non-climate-controlled space, the untreated particle board will soak up moisture and fail. Mine are in a climate-controlled space and their load is spread pretty evenly, no signs of sagging. If you're planning to store those boxes of rare-earth magnets and ball bearings on these shelves, better think again. But they're more than adequate to the task of housing larger, moderately heavy loads.
- The shelves come packaged in a bare minimum of protective material, true. However, the sparing use of protective material is nonetheless adequate because parts can't really bang into each other during shipping. Of the four shelves that I've assembled, I have found ONE shelf support with a coating defect. That appears to be an incomplete application rather than damage in transit.
Overall, I feel as though I got a great value in these shelves and happily give them 5 stars in spite of the (really minor) assembly nuisances... which I only had to deal with ONCE, after all. I found ZERO sharp edges and ZERO manufacturing wonkiness (outside the previously mentioned incomplete coating). Affordable (but not cheap), durable bulk storage. Happy camper.
Assembly: The directions are fairly clear and straight-forward, with the exception of when you join the two units together (it is not 1 uniform piece of metal in length - you have to put 2 together and join them with the shelf). I had a little trouble trying to get those posts to stay together, but I used my rubber mallet and hammered it on. The rubber mallet was the only tool used. It looks a little un-stable, but I've had no problems with it thus far (have all my drinks, water bottles, and water jugs on that shelf). I put this together alone, but it would have been much faster with another person. However, it is not necessary.
Usage: This little thing has cleared up so much space with my garage and pantry. I've put my large spice containers, rice containers, 2-liter sodas, 24 ct water bottles, and much more on these shelves. I also have put my shop-vac and steam cleaner on top to clear up space. My dog food container goes on the bottom shelf. I'm surprised on how sturdy this is. I'm not at the 4000 pound mark, but for a general storage, which is what we wanted to use this for, it does the job nicely.
I also have 2 stainless steel grate shelves in my garage. I prefer this for food items (no holes means no breaks), and use the stainless steel grate shelves for larger items (paint, etc.). If you want a quality unit for a good value, this will do the trick.
If I had been in a bad mood or in a rush to assemble would have lost at least 2 stars due to no instructions (except as in pictured to prove no exaggeration the single page titled "Assembly Instructions" of which there are none).
When I saw the box delivered I was prepared for disappointment since no decent shelf could come from such a diminutive flat box.
Upon opening the box I had mixed emotions when I saw the 5) 1/4" particle board shelves knowing they would be short lived in any moist environment and unable to support almost any weight even under the best of circumstances if called upon in the anticipated 1.5 ft x 4ft spans of each shelf..However when I saw how the packing had been engineered to protect the shelves at the corners I had a glimmer of hope.
What begins as a confusing array of light gauge powder coated steel pieces once locked in place becomes the frame for an elegant shelving solution. At this point the "bones" without the weight of any shelves only weigh about 10 pounds and cans be carried without dragging or even carried over head by one person and placed into position .
Ultimately 30 square feet (or 36 cubic feet) of rigid shelf space comes from a knocked down unit 4' x 1.5' x 4" and only weighing about 50 pounds.
Since nothing is perfect. You should not buy this if:
You will be storing wet or leaking objects unless you immediately replace or cover the absorbent particle board surface.
You are looking for shelving that will hold up to any moisture levels or any caustic, or salty environment for any time because the crimped sheet steel of the frame will succumb to rust and crumble shortly after the shelves (no matter how you treat them).
You are not inherently "structurally or mechanically inclined" and/or have no burning desire to be without calling A HELP NUMBER answered by someone who will undoubtedly lose respect for you and reveal it with tones and exasperation.
You don't have an abiding respect for less is more or haven't already paid your dues to the institution of "too damn heavy to move".
You should buy this if:
You like an intellectual challenge met with a substantial reward. Or do $50 puzzles.
You have a need for freestanding shelving in warehouse, basement, accounting office etc.
You need to move a shelf by yourself because you are either independent, or lonely.
You believe that resources can be better conserved by inducements & voluntary actions for market reasons rather than adding cost and restricting choices incurred due to regulation.
