Product Description
Ditch the dairy, prize the plant-based
Avoiding lactose, or animal-based products in general, but still want the probiotic benefits and deliciousness yogurt has to offer? You've come to the right place! Our vegan yogurt starter culture lets you make your own non-dairy yogurt right at home.
DIY yogurt FTW
Why homemade yogurt?
Yogurt you make at home has more live active cultures than store-bought, and won't have any artificial preservatives—only ingredients you pick yourself! It's also much more cost-effective, as well as simply being a fun and fulfilling hobby.
This kit includes everything you need for culturing your own homemade yogurt:
Starter Culture + Instructions
4 packets of our direct-set starter culture. Each packet can culture 1-2 quarts of dairy-free milk, or you can use 2 packets for 1-4 gallons of milk.
Pocket Test Thermometer
Easily monitor the temperature of your milk during the yogurt-making process.
Cotton Nut Milk Bag
You can use this to strain your yogurt (making it thicker), or for making your own plant-based milk!
Pomona's Pectin
Includes pectin + calcium powder for jelling vegan yogurt without sugar. Use to thicken plant-based yogurt, or for making jam, pudding, or glaze.
What kind of plant-based milks can I use to make vegan yogurt?
Although your results will vary depending on which you choose, you can use this starter to culture just about any dairy-free milk you can imagine, including nut, seed, grain, and legume milk—and beyond. While store-bought milk may be used, we recommend using milk with as few additives as possible.
Do I need a yogurt maker for this starter?
While this is a thermophilic starter, meaning it cultures at 105-112°F, this can be accomplished using other appliances, such as a food dehydrator, folding proofer, crockpot, thermos, pilot light or oven light, or insulated cooler with heating pad.
Will my vegan yogurt be a similar consistency to dairy yogurt?
Soy milk is the only kind that will thicken naturally, but you can add pectin or gelatin to any non-dairy milk to help it along. You should also keep in mind that plant-based yogurt often doesn't set until chilled.
How much yogurt can I make with this starter?
It comes with 4 packets of starter, each of which can culture up to a half gallon of milk; you can also use 2 packets at a time to culture up to 4 gallons. Thus, you can culture a maximum of 8 gallons of milk total, resulting in ~4 gallons of yogurt.
Can I use store-bought non-dairy milk to make vegan yogurt?
In general, yes; however, additives and preservatives can interfere with the culturing process. We particularly don't recommend using commercial almond milk. The best way to ensure you have natural milk is to make your own—it's easier than you think.
Is it possible to make a dairy-free yogurt starter that's heirloom-style?
Short answer: No...but there's a loophole. If you can tolerate a bit of dairy, you can maintain a dairy mother culture (such as our Heirloom Yogurt Starter), re-culturing it weekly, and simply use some of that batch to culture your plant-based milk.

An internet search found this company, and I then discovered that I could get the starter kit here on Amazon.
It took two tries. It turns out that the automated yogurt process isn't quite so automatic, and the first batch didn't turn out. Add the fact that my eyes are bad, and I can't really see the little numbers on the dial thermometer all that well... Ah well, the way-too-thin results made pretty good pudding once corn starch was added.
For Take Two, I found a post on the manufacturer's blog that gave very precise instructions for making vegan yogurt in the Instant Pot. I used a digital thermometer (nice big read-out), and carefully heated the milk on the stove in a pan rather than using the automated "boil" setting. Aside from those details, I followed the blog post precisely.
The result was, at first, almost solid. Not like yogurt at all, just one big lump. I thought I'd messed up again, but went ahead with the rest of the process, anyway. Refrigerated overnight, "whey" separated out (is it technically "whey" if you use oat milk?). I recall reading somewhere that if your yogurt turns out lumpy or separates in the fridge, just toss it in the blender for a few whirls. I did so.
OMG. Smooth, creamy, mild, delicious. It's the best yogurt I've ever had. It's perfect as-is--so tasty that it really doesn't even need flavoring or sweeteners. I will absolutely be buying refills on the starter culture and pectin. This is my go-to yogurt from now on, no more worries about the sugar content in commercial brands.
If you are looking for a plant-based home-made yogurt, I think you will be as happy as I am with Cultures for Health.
