1. Turn on your lamp (2nd position on 3-way sockets).
2. Unplug the lamp, remove the shade and bulb.
3. Screw the dimmer firmly into your lamp socket.
4. Install an ordinary one-way light bulb, even in a 3-way socket.
5. Plug the lamp into a wall outlet, wait a moment and touch any metal portion of your lamp to select desired light level. 1st touch-NIGHT LIGHT; 2nd touch-MEDIUM, for normal room light; 3rd touch-HIGH full brightness for reading; 4th touch-OFF.
For use with any metal socket lamp.

NOTE: This dimmer will not work with CFL or non-dimmable LED bulbs. I have used a dimmable LED bulb in it, but incandescent bulbs work best. The LED bulb would flicker sometimes. Nice if you want a fast strobe light, but not nice if you're reading or watching TV. I don't know if the problem was with the LED bulb or the Touch Control. I had no other Touch Control to try the bulb on.
Update 10/27/15: I've been using this touch control for over 2 years now. I switched back to an incandescent bulb after the LED bulb flickered. I recently bought a name brand GE dimmable LED bulb. It works GREAT. No flickering. Don't buy cheap no-name LED bulbs. I highly recommend this product.
I have this old all metal lamp that I like a lot and wanted to turn it into a touch lamp so I ordered this product even though I read all the bad reviews and when I got it I saw how it probably worked and instead of thinking I plugged it in and the light popped/flashed and it never worked again and after I installed another bulb it lit but would not dim.... Scratched my head and carefully looked at the dimmer and now believe I found the problem and if they won't send me a replacement dimmer I might order another to cure my curiosity... Here is what I think the problem was: The lamp plug was NOT polarized and I stood a 50/50 chance of breaking the dimmer depending on which side of the outlet the shell of the lamp socket, not the tip of the lamp socket, connected to the neutral(aka ground) side of the wall outlet receptacle... Get it wrong then instead of the voltage going to the lamp being 1/3 of normal it was 3 x normal blowing the bulb and blowing a safety fuse link inside the dimmer breaking it. If you understand electricity and transformers and think about what I wrote you'll come to understand my logic...
SOLUTION: I'm going to change the lamp plug from unpolarized to polarized and ensure the lamp socket base is connected to the neutral side of the plug.!!!! I'm going to order a new dimmer...

So I have installed the electrical boxes inside lamps before to make them three way and was going to do that. However, I saw this while choose that and I got them in the hopes of saving myself a world of time. And they did!
One word to the wise. Be sure to look for shorter bulbs when you order these. The normal A21 size ones didn’t work anymore, A19 was close but no cigar and the smaller LED type lamps didn’t have the correct power variability to perform the normal three way options. I ended up having to find special bulbs for “old fashioned lamps”.
Still well worth the trouble and I am happy to announce that both parents still live.
I screwed the Westek into the lamp and, of course, right out of the box it did not work. There were two reasons, both fixable:
1. The cardboard insulator in the socket was too high. I removed the lamp's socket and trimmed the cardboard so it was just slightly below the rim of the metal.
2. I bent the 'ears' on the Westek socket slightly out so they would make contact with the metal socket (the socket on the lamp) when it was screwed in.
So far, in the past couple of weeks, I've seen no issues. I'm willing to admit there may be problems coming up, but this is a dead simple, and seemingly well built. Unless it gets nailed with a power surge it should NOT fail (even then, it would be unlikely to fail). It would be hard to screw it up and have it work at all.
4 stars because I had to do some adjustment to the Westek socket itself. I had to trim the cardboard in the lamp socket, but that's not Westek's problem - trim the cardboard insulator and it works (IF you have problems insure those metal tabs are making good contact with the metal socket on the lamp.
IF I HAVE TO TELL YOU TO UNPLUG THE LAMP BEFORE SCREWING AROUND WITH THE SOCKET, THEN YOU SHOULDN'T BE LEFT ALONE.
Update: 2013-04-22: As others have said, be aware that 'most' lamps are now shipped with plastic (Bakelite?) sockets. How wunnerful! You cannot service these sockets, meaning you can't change out the cord because THERE IS NO WAY TO GET THESE SOCKETS OPEN (cords can become brittle, chewed, kinked...) Planned obsolescence. Even 'throw away' Walmart lamps cost too much for me to toss them. SO... I marched my butt down to Home Depot and bought a few metal sockets - they don't wear out, but they may pose a threat TO THE REALLY STUPID AMONG US who we all must protect at ALL costs). Then went on a lamp hunt through the house, dismantling 'plastic' socket bearing lamps and putting in the metal sockets, changing out the cord as I went Pain in the butt, but makes me feel better.
