There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
The prior reviews with pictures were an enormous help in making my decisions. Granted, the few negative reviews gave me hesitation, but i decided to go with this unit knowing Amazon would take it back if it did not live up to my expectations.
It was delivered via Prime quickly. Had to help the FedEx guy unload it, it was shipped upright, at least in his truck. I sat it inside the door and cut the strap, then lifted the outer carton off. Beautiful machine well packaged and no damage.
I have encasement windows, so with advance planning had gone to Lowes and had the plywood cut to fit the window minus the 6" plastic hose connector that came with the unit. ($11 for thin oak, I use blackout shades so Plexiglas was not a necessity for me)
Super easy setup after letting it sit for 2 hours per the recommendations. I also bought cut-to-fit air filters for the intake air hose. The window kit was set up and the plywood in place within 30 minutes and weather stripped. As a previous review noted, the intake and exhaust outlet are side by side. To make it more efficient, I got a 5" to 4" converter nozzle and attached it to the exhaust vent. I got an elbow joint turning the exhaust away from the intake opening. I then put a 4" dryer hose on the outlet and ran it far away from the intake vent. I also bought some insulated wrap for the exhaust hose running from the unit to the window inside my apartment. This is a must since the hose gets VERY hot and cancels the cooling effect somewhat.
At this point it was 90+ degrees outside, and it was 85 inside. I plugged it up and was kind of disappointed in the not-so-cool air blowing out. Within an hour, it had the temp down to 78 inside. It stayed there all evening making me think this unit may be a dud. My old Sharp keeps my bedroom at a constant 65. Like another reviewer stated, I went to bed hoping for the best, but expecting to return this on Monday. I closed my bedroom door at midnight and went to sleep. I slept in till 8am and when I opened the bedroom door, I was met with a gush of COLD air. I left the unit on high fan speed set at 64 on the blue display. I set a digital thermometer at waist level in the room and it read 63 degrees. The unit just needed time to cool the room and did it WAY better than I expected. I did leave the ceiling fan on low overnight to help keep the air moving. This unit does blow the air straight up, slightly angled outward from the front. The ceiling fan helps circulate the air. Be sure you have the fan set with the blades rotating counter-clockwise to move the air downward.
Today the temp is at 90 outside, a comfy 70 inside. I have the unit set to 65 on med fan speed. I could not be happier! The unit is not that loud, either. My Sharp is a single hose and is a bit quieter, but this one is by no means loud. I have it sitting right behind my couch between 2 surround speakers. I can hear sound fine from both speakers behind me.
I hooked up a drain hose to a bladder bag to capture any drain water from the unit. I have the same hooked up to my Sharp and it drains about a gallon a day. This one has not drained any after 24 hours of constant use.
Overall I am extremely happy with this unit. It is sleek, does not take up a lot of space and does what it is supposed to very well.
I will update if I find any negatives.
***UPDATE***
Still very happy with this unit. The thermostat actually keeps the temp in the room at the set temp on the display. The unit does an excellent job evaporating the water that collect in the drain pan, as I have yet to have any drain out. I disconnected the drain bag and tipped the unit back just to make sure it wasn't blocked. It wasn't! But no water has drained after a month of this running. I am still emptying the one in my bedroom multiple times daily. Will update again when my first electric bill since installing this arrives.
For a start, it has dual hoses. That may initially seem to fall somewhere on the scale between "so what" and "what a pain", but you actually WANT dual hoses. Here's why:
Normal air conditioners are installed with part of the unit inside (think of it as 'the cold part') and part of the unit outside (or 'the hot part'). The 'hot part' contains the compressor -- similar to the engine of a car. It provides the power for the machine but, in so doing, generates a lot of heat that has to be removed somehow. The 'hot part' is cooled by the movement of air. It is said to 'breathe' because it takes in cooler air and expels warmer air.
When you have a single hose portable unit, that hose is only used for 'exhaling' the hot air. That means that the 'inhaled' air to cool the mechanics will have to come from your room. So the air that you're paying to cool is being used to, in turn, cool the motor and then being 'exhaled' out that single hose in the window. Because it is constantly drawing air from the room and expelling it via the hose, a single-hose unit will create a vacuum in the room you're trying to cool. This means that doors won't really want to close, much of the air-conditioned air is being expelled and your home will begin to draw in the hot air from outside in order to equalize the interior air pressure.
Dual-hose units, however, have one hose dedicated to each part of the 'breathing' cycle - one hose for 'inhale' and one for 'exhale'. That means that your air-conditioned air stays put right in the room you're trying to cool, and that's a Good Thing(tm). The result for me is that -- while I live in a top floor, full-sun-all-day apartment in a breezeless section of Los Angeles (a.k.a. "a Broiler") -- my bedroom now stays shockingly cold and I wind up turning this unit off in the middle of the night to avoid frost bite. Other (single hose) units had to run 24x7 through the warmer months just to keep the room livable. Comfortable was never an option.
What's more, the Whynter is a much quieter machine than I've had before. You have to understand that there is no such thing as a "quiet" portable AC (because the 'hot part' is in your personal space). So if you're trying to maintain library silence, this will not work for you. It is louder than a fan but still MUCH quieter than any previous portables I've owned.
I also like that Whynter eschewed silly and unnecessary moving parts (motorized louvers, for example). Those things always broke within weeks of heavy use anyway and eventually caused rattling annoyance as I waited for the previous machines to die.
All air conditioners create condensation -- moisture that collects from the humidity in the air on the cooled internal parts of the machine. It's why you always see window air conditioners dripping -- they're expelling condensate. This unit collects that condensation in an internal tank, heats it up and evaporates it out the 'exhale' hose so that -- in all but the most humid conditions -- you never have to empty the bucket. That is also a Good Thing(tm); however, all units will need to be drained at some point if you use them long enough and in a wide enough variety of weather patterns. Most portable ACs seem to have considered placement of the drain plug in an "Oh crap! We forgot the drain plug!" kind of way. But the Whynter has the drain situated conveniently on the back of the unit, and high enough off of the ground that you don't wind up having to dig into the carpet to unscrew it. My previous unit's drain plug was mounted so low that when placed on carpet it became entirely inaccessible. That won't be a problem with the Whynter.
Whynter's remote control is perhaps the best I've seen for a portable AC. It has its own little LCD display to show you the current state of the machine that stays wirelessly in sync with what is happening at the unit. So if you use the unit to turn the temp to 75F, for example, the remote will also show a target temp of 75F. That's a neat feature that means you can lay in bed, grab the remote and know how you want to adjust it based on its current state. This is yet another Good Thing(tm). But it could be a bit better. If the LCD glowed at night when you press a button so you can read it without turning on a light, that would be helpful. It would also be nicer if the keys had a more distinctive feel that would allow you to grab it in a dark room, find the button you want by touch and adjust the unit quickly. As it is, you have to have some external light source to be able to see what the remote is telling you.
I've also previously had portable ACs that were clearly channeling Vegas when they designed their onboard LCD displays. Nobody wants an "All Singing! All Dancing!" animated LCD mere feet from where they're trying to sleep. Fortunately, the Whynter's display is just a placid blue with simple to read black characters. Much less obtrusive but, again, it isn't perfect. For a start, the LCD is positioned on the front of the unit instead of on the top. If you happen to be no more than 24" tall then it is right at eye level. But if you're taller than that you'll need to take a knee or a seat to see the LCD. A position on top of the unit would have been a much better design choice. Also, the LCD is backlit whenever the unit is running and that isn't something you can change. You're just going to have a blue light in the room when the unit is on, full stop. And when the unit is turned off but you still need the display (like when you're setting the timer function to turn the unit on later in the day), the LCD doesn't light up so it is difficult to impossible to read without a flashlight. My preference would be that the LCD only lights up when you press a button, then turns off after a few seconds so you can have a dark AND cool room. My quick hack solution was to affix a piece of cloth that hangs down over the display, but that disables the remote control (because the receiver is somewhere in/around that display). So I can either have a dark room or a remote controllable AC. That is sub-optimal.
On balance, I still give this a 5-star review because it just does what you want it to do -- cool the room -- and it does it very well. Its comparative quiet operation, dual hose configuration and exceptional cooling prowess far outweigh the little design quibbles I have with the unit. Especially when you consider that the next step up in machine design/quality/power (Movencool) is six times the price of this unit! Plus the Amazon Prime shipping? It's a no brainer. This is the unit you want.

We use both the heating and cooling features equally as much - and both modes are very effective. As a dehumidifier, the lack of a humidity target setting means we use our dedicated dehumidifiers instead. But if you didn't have a separate dehumidifier, this feature would be useful.
Like all appliances that use an air compressor, the unit produces a fair bit of noise. Only an exterior, non-portable air conditioner would reduce this inherent noise problem. But for many users, exterior or window-insert type air conditioners are simply not practical. In our case, exposing an air conditioner to the hostile exterior environment would mean that the unit would not last very long.
The two hose design makes the product very efficient, and most of the competition want a lot more money for this feature. Because of outside air having poor air quality in this area, we typically do not have the intake actually drawing in outside air, but using interior air instead (without the second hose). Thus we affectionately call our AC unit, the "Elephant in the Room".
Its possible to unbox alone but would recommend having someone help if possible.
I got one unit to help keep my apartment cool during the summer.
Shipping was quick and in good condition.
Machines installation and setup was quick and easy.
The unit is loud, so if you're a light sleeper then you may not want this in your bedroom.
It takes a while to cool down a room and I used my fans to help push the air around and cool down the rest of my 1 bedroom apartment.
Overall, I'm happy with it so far, works as expected.
Will update this in a couple months.
After the first couple of hours, I turned of the A/C and just put it on dehumidify mode. JUST AS COLD!!! It has an indicator that shows you the FEEL of the temperature. So when it is 25 in the house, the Whynter dehumidifies it down to 23, then it slows to a pleasant hum of air circulation only - then if the humidity goes up (and you do feel it getting warmer in the room) it kicks back in and blasts out that icy air again. Cool feature: you never have to drain the de-humidifier; it boots the moisture out the vent hose as hot, moist air - the blast outside feels just like your clothes-dryer vent, but moister.
If you keep in mind that this is a 110V unit, and that God only allows 110V to create so many BTUs (physics, you know), then this is hands-down probably the best unit available to cool a small apartment or, in my case, to supplement central air conditioning in a larger home. Anyone saying it is under-performant just doesn't understand physics - they needed CENTRAL Air Conditioning because they are trying to do the impossible with 110V.
