***Update 8/23/2016 - Unfortunately the KP65 that I had purchased began to crap out on me. It seemed like it was just hit or miss whether or not the trigger transmitted when it was hit...no matter what I tried. I contacted Yamaha customer service and spoke to someone (an American in California) who created a ticket with my info and told me someone would contact me for further instructions. Later I did receive a call but I was not able to take the call and a voice mail was left requesting a call back. I was not able to return the call until the next day. I called them back and they ran through the troubleshooting steps with me, which I had done everything except one thing already. They said to try that one thing (put the kick pad on a separate input to rule the inputs out on the brain) and then give them a call back/or email and they'd process a replacement right away. Unfortunately the tests showed that my unit was bad, but Yamaha shipped me one out and it arrived in perfect condition and is working flawlessly at this time. Yamaha's excellent customer service and warranty policy (1 year) has allowed me to retain this 5 star review in tact. Great job Yamaha! Other manufacturers should take note of your warranty policy and follow it as an example.
Anyway, I just swapped this unit into place, hooked up my new double pedal, plugged it in and HOLY CRAP IT'S WAY TOO LOUD!!! Yep, I actually had to dial down the pad volume a bit to get it in line with the rest of the kit. I'm playing CRAZY fast with my new pedals and I have had zero unregistered notes. It's working absolutely flawlessly, zero complaints about responsiveness or playability. it is perfect. I was a little surprised at how soft and spongey the rubber pad is... it's nothing like the surface of my other pads. But it works, we'll just see if it's as endlessly durable as my old pads have been.
The only thing that really pulls it down for me is just aesthetics. The placement of the input jacks and wingnuts that hold the baseplate to the pad tower ensure that this pad is about as uncompromisingly ugly as is humanly possible. But then, the DTX kit is pretty hideous to begin with what with the complete lack of cable management options. Still, the old kick tower wasn't THIS bad.
