Product Description
From the director of Arlington Road comes a spine-tingling, super-natural thriller based on actual events that will rattle your nerves and shake your beliefs. Distraught by the sudden, tragic death of his wife (Debra Messing), John Klein (Richard Gere), a journalist for The Washington Post, finds himself mysteriously drawn to a small West Virginia town when his car inexplicably strands him. Rescued by the sympathetic but skeptical local police sergeant (Laura Linney), he soon learns that many of the town's residents have been beset by bizarre events, including sightings of an eerie "moth-like" entity, similar to the one seen by his late wife. Investigating further and having his own terrifying encounters with the creature, he becomes obsessed with the idea that this supernatural being canpredict impending calamities and is trying to warn the town of one. Is this a psychic delusion brought on by his grief or can he convince the police sergeant that there's a tragedy that must be averted

On a technical level, the film is a triumph. It's brilliantly acted by the entire cast. And though the special effects are nothing to write home about, they don't need to be, as the story is driven much more by character and mystery than by effects.
And that mystery is quite a chilling one, making this one of the more effective horror films even though (or perhaps because) it doesn't boast a lot of gore effects or jump scares. It relies entirely on intellectual horror centered on the exploration of the boundaries of human knowledge and rationality.
It's meant to be inspired by true events. Usually when I see that line in a horror movie's advertising, I'm turned off by it, because there's often some fraud at the center of the story. In this case, it's a bit of a mixed bag. There was a true event in Point Pleasant in the mid-'60s in which people reported seeing some kind of entity. John Keel's book applied a particular interpretation to that event, which served as the basis for this film. If meant to be interpreted as an actual true story, it's going to fall a bit flat because it strains the bounds of credibility too far. However, I think the film lends itself rather to being interpreted as merely a hypothetical. It doesn't say "this is what happened." Instead, it asks "what if this is what happened?" In that sense, it provides a rather chilling interpretation that's as attractive to skeptics as to believers, and therein lies one of the film's greatest strengths.
I admit I'm a bit of a biased audience member because the Mothman is one of my favorite cryptids/entities/whatever, but I think I can say without fear of contradiction that this film is an excellent and thrilling watch even for those of you who might not be as familiar with its source material as I am.
Basically, the main character, John Klein (played by Richard Geere) is a Washington Post columnist, at the start of the film happily married to his wife Mary (played by Debra Messing). Very early in the film a strange creature appears in front of the two coming back from buying a new home and in trying to miss the creature Mary is injured. It turns out the accident was relatively minor, as the real issues is glioblastoma, which is diagnosed after the accident and which leads to Mary’s death.
John never really recovers, and the film picks up two years later when he inexplicably loses track of time and though he never intended to, drove from the DC area to Point Pleasant, West Virginia, where he falls down a rabbit hole investigating a local who claims to have seen him there before, why he ended up in Point Pleasant for no apparent reason, and sightings of a creature that is connected to unexplained phenomena in other places in the world and was the one that caused the accident two years back. John becomes close to the local sheriff Connie Mills (played by Laura Linney) and another local, Gordon Smallwood (played by Will Patton), as they all fall under the spell of the mysterious creature and trying to find out not only what it is, but what dire disaster it is apparently warning them of, one that will kill many people.
Very atmospheric, often beautiful photography, very moody, good acting. I think a bit light on answers but I don’t think answers were ever the point. What the mothman was or is is never really answered but it is no less interesting as a result. Very X-files ish and grounded in some good writing and acting about grief and moving on and finding love again, even if that love is platonic.
