There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Thinking the translucent flakes may have resulted from bacterial/algal biofilms in the lines and the white flakes were mineral deposits, we changed the filter within the fridge, and ran gallons of water through the new filter. This didn't help - the translucent flakes never disappeared and the white flakes came back 2-3 days. Ice-cubes remained as bad as they were before (here too, I dumped at least 10-15 loads of ice made over 2 weeks).
Finally, as a last resort before getting a new fridge, I did the following after unhooking the fridge from the main water line:
a) Pump two liters of bleach through the fridge water lines (letting the bleach sit in the line for 20-30 minutes).
b) Pump several liters of clean water to flush the bleach.
c) Pump two liters of hydrogen peroxide through the fridge water line, letting it sit for 30 minutes.
d) Pump 10-20 liters of clean water to flush the peroxide.
e) Replaced the filter within the fridge.
After reconnecting the main supply line, the water was clean for exactly two days before we started seeing very small white mineral flakes again. After reading the reviews here, I decided to install the Watts filter as a pre-filter.
I mounted the filter behind the refrigerator; two problems encountered by other reviewers are that an additional supply-line (connecting hose) or a mounting bracket are not provided with the filter. Supply-lines are readily available - Watts' makes these lines that are available from Amazon. The bracket is more troublesome. I was going to fashion something crude using zip-ties when I found that 2.5 inch conduit hangers were the right diameter to hold the filter. I replaced the bolts/nuts on the conduit hanger with longer bolts/wingnuts to make loosening/tightening easier. All put together (supply line + conduit hangers), it cost about $12 to mount the filter. I've attached photographs to make my descriptions clearer.
It has now been a month since the filter has been installed and the neither the water nor the ice from the fridge have flakes of either kind. The water tastes great and is odor-free.
Its only been a month, so I cannot comment on the filters longevity, but so far its been great.
Update - June 17, 2013

Update - June 17, 2013
It has been just over a year. Filter is still working very well.
So obviously I'm pleased with performance. It kills the chlorine smell/taste entirely.
Hopefully it helps with any other stuff that's in there which I can't taste or smell.
The old one worked very well. The water still tastes fine after at least a year.
Replacing ahead of schedule. Mainly because I didn't want to miss out on the deal.
When I complete the installation I will leave the old filter (which will not be expired yet) as a primary stage and the new filter as the secondary stage since it's still good for two or three years.
The water should be ultra pure now! The primary stage should make the new filter last longer since the bulk of contaminants are removed before it gets there. That's my theory at least.
Two stages will help because technically I use it beyond it's specified flow rate of 0.5 gpm. I custom made a simplistic faucet, sort of like the one that's over the spit bowl at the dentist, next to the fridge for drinking water. I just bent a shepards hook in the 1/4" copper tubing and attached it to a little "T" valve. Werks nice! I used a splitter to supply the faucet and the fridge's icemaker. Next fridge will have the faucet in the door but not sure when that will be . . .
Britta is a pain and gets in the way. I never bothered to try it. And look at the size of it, this thing is three times the size of one of those things
It's like 2.5 inches in diameter for perspective. A little bit of trouble to install this and you will not have to worry about changing the filter for a long time. Especially easy if you have a fridge with a built in faucet.
On another subject; the fittings. The filter comes with two 3/8" to 1/4" fittings that you have to connect to each end. The male 3/8" is pre-wrapped with teflon tape. I threw some plumbers putty on anyway to be safe. The 1/4" side is a compression fitting that includes a brass insert meant to be used with polyethelene tubing. It is not meant to be used with metal tubing so you'd have to buy new fittings if that's what your plan is. You can use them with 1/4" compression connector ice machine hoses successfully as that's what I'm doing.
The manual is very vague on how far you need to screw in the 3/8" side into the filter itself. The filter is plastic so of course I was worried if I went too far, I'd crack the shell or strip the threads. The manual simply says, in all caps, "DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN". Great. My first few attempts at connecting everything resulted in VERY slow leaks from both ends; slow enough you could watch drops of water form and fall. You actually need to screw the fittings in relatively far, past where the teflon tape has been wrapped. I uploaded an image to display just how far I had to tighten before they stopped leaking. The image is just a close-up of the filter on the left and connector on the right; click on the product and 'customer images' and you'll see it.
Hope that helps you not get as frustrated as I did. :-)
