This particular bit has a 2in cutting edge. Its quite long. So be advised with this bit. If you are using its full cutting edge. Use it at shallow depths, because a 2in cutting edge bites into quite a bit of wood along its length and if you are trying to take to much wood at a time. The router can quickly get away from you.
Now there are a few other top router bit companies out there. Amana, Eagle America, MLCS, and CMT. I love Amana bits, but they are more expensive than other brands. Which is probably why they do not usually make the list of prefered brands in the forums. I will probably never own an MLCS router bits because they are middle of the road router bits and just do not maintain their cutting edges very long, but people love them because they are cheap and reliably get the job done with acceptable results. For me though MLCS bits are not cheap enough to be throw away bits and at their price point I would rather spend a few bucks more and get a bit that would last me much longer with better quality results. I have never tried any of the Eagle America bits, but have heard good things about them. I do own a few CMT bits which are priced around the same as freud and whiteside, but they just do not perform as well as freud and whiteside to me. Some people swear by them. I personally believe you can get better bits for the price. That's just my opinion. The 4 standout brands in router bit companies are definitely Freud, Whiteside, MLCS, and CMT. These are brands that you will hear about the most and if you read forums, they are pretty much the go to brands for most people. Amana makes great bits, but are expensive. Freud and whiteside are hands down the best bits on the market. Because they hold their edges for a significant amount of time, yield quality results, and exceptionally machined, and the price point is perfect.
My first time with this type of bit doing clean up an rough bandsawing for 8 legs for an art furniture night stand build. Reviewed the problems on the Yonico bit and decided to go with a new Whiteside bit . Considerably more expensive. And the quality of hardware and packaging showed me why.
Worked well with light passes and running the cut again after I'd finished.
Used on well figured Maple with it's multiple grain patterns in a hard wood.
It does take a big bit if you're not sneaking up on the cut.
My next bit will be Whiteside dual spiral cutting bit when I save up some money/ LOL!
If you can get away with any other method, any other shorter bit, do that first.
If you need to follow a top-mounted template on something thick using a router table, this is your bit. It should be obvious to anyone that has worked with wood before that such a tremendously long bit is going to have forces put on it that are different than a shorter bit. You have to take absolutely tiny bites with a bit this size, because there's way more area engaging the cutting surface.
When used appropriately, the cut quality is outstanding, and I am amazed at the tolerances of the bit and blades over the length.
This is a bit you buy because you already have a powerful router and just have that one project you need to get done and you don't want to buy a shaper. If you're going to be doing a lot of cuts or need a lot of precision, start by buying a shaper.
