Customers like the spring in the hat. They mention that it's well balanced, and closes on some foam. The damper is flat and spring-loaded, and gasketed. The spring-assisted self-closing baffle seems like a much better way to keep the trap from flapping in the wind. The cap is spring- loaded and is an advantage of the product.

"The flapper is spring loaded, well balanced and closes on some foam weatherstripping...." Read more

15 customers mention7 positive8 negative

Customers are mixed about the fit of the hat. Some mention that it fits nicely and snugly to the foam seal, while others say that it's a tough fit for a six inch duct. The damper is too small to fit into the side holes of the vent, and the collar is very small. The round duct portion is too short, and there's also a pretty loose fit on the grill. Overall, the product is solid and may need replacing.

"...6" duct (crimped end) fits easily inside it. It has a solid feel and great quality finish...." Read more

"...However, it is a tough fit for a six inch duct. I had to cut and flair the duct for it to fit properly." Read more

"...The flapper seats well yet opens even with the vent fan on low speed which is good as while the wire mesh is enough to keep animals out, don't..." Read more

"...Only good thing is that it has very small collar - almost too small. But I needed that; others had 12" long 6"tubes attached...." Read more

Customers are mixed about the seal. Some mention that it seems to seal just fine, while others say that it's very poor and the foam seal is the weak point. Some say that the seal is misplaced and not even close to being airtight.

"...It would stay open and even if pushed closed it wouldn't make a decent seal...." Read more

"The flapper is spring loaded, well balanced and closes on some foam weatherstripping...." Read more

"...well except the foam rubber seals were poorly cut and do not form a good tight seal between the flap and the foam rubber seal strips...." Read more

Solid construction, fewer drafts.
5 Stars
Solid construction, fewer drafts.
For the second time in ten years, my range's hood-vent opening needed to be replaced. I had to replace the original plastic flapped unit about three years ago after a bird broke one of the flaps trying (and succeeding) to get in a build a nest. For the second unit, I installed some wire mesh on the inside which kept the birds out, but still ended up breaking anyway. In just three years the plastic got very brittle. Needless to say, I wanted to replace it with something better this time.A few things really drew me to this Broan unit. To start with, it's metal, I have no concerns about this getting brittle and falling apart in a few years. I also like that it includes a built in mesh screen to keep the birds out. Finally, the spring-assisted self-closing baffle seems like a much better way to keep the wind and drafts out.Installation was kind of a pain, although not due to the Broan. My builder had cut a very poor opening for the vent hole, and this new unit required me to shave down some metal flashing to fit it into the wall. Other than that and a coat of spray paint, it goes on like you'd expect. Screw it on, attach the screen, and you're done.I'm super happy with this thing so far. The flaps on my last cover would flap constantly on windy days, letting in drafts and making an annoying sound. This new unit is completely silent with no drafts or flapping at all. It's really well made and well worth the increased price over the cheaper plastic options.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and well designed
Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2020
I read the reviews here and bought this vent cover. I was not disappointed. I added an air conditioner to my outbuilding and this vent was what I needed to finish it off nicely. I spray-painted a matte finish to match the exterior paint. The instructions for this vent say "wall cap flashing installs on house sheathing material". I take this to mean that the flange goes behind the siding, installed from inside the building. But I chose to install the flange on the exterior siding as I saw others had done, based on the photos in their reviews.

I used a six-inch hole saw to cut through the sheet rock and siding. Unfortunately, the cover's duct connection flares significantly near the flange so I had to do a lot of grinding away at the siding before the flange would sit flush against the siding. This was really the most troublesome part of the installation. The other thing to consider is that you will need a short section of six-inch duct to get all the way through the wall and mate with your interior ducting. The shape of the duct connection on the vent was not what I expected, so the duct was a little difficult to connect but I made it work.

The final result looks and functions very well, is completely weatherproof after caulking, and should be trouble free for many, many years to come.
