Product Description
Fino’s Fine Porcelain number 4-size Coffee Filter Cone is designed to brew the most distinct, aromatic, flavorful coffee using the manual pour-over brewing method. It’s easy to brew only what’s needed for the freshest coffee in every cup. No more stale or burnt coffee that’s been made hours in advance or overbrewing coffee that just gets poured down the drain. Pour-over coffee, or hand-pour brewing, is a time-tested Japanese technique that’s practiced by coffee lovers worldwide. Its process of slowly pouring a thin steady stream of water over medium-ground coffee allows complete control over the quality and flavor of each brewed cup of coffee. For a perfect brew, preheat the Coffee Filter Cone under hot running water, then place it over a mug or carafe. Insert a paper or reusable coffee filter and measure in the coffee (approximately 2 rounded tablespoons per 6-ounces of water). Wet the grinds slightly with just-boiled water and let them sit for 15 to 30 seconds. Slowly pour over the remaining hot water and allow the coffee to finish dripping. It’s the perfect coffee-accessories gift for at-home baristas and coffee enthusiasts. Fino’s fine-quality porcelain is durable, heat resistant, free from lead and cadmium, and dishwasher safe for easy cleanup. Brought to you by HIC-Harold Import Company.

I use the filter cone mainly for making a single cup of coffee at a time, and it makes a superb cup of brew. You have to experiment with the quantity of coffee and your pouring technique, but in general I use about the same amount of coffee grounds per cup as I did with my Bunn or Mr. Coffee coffeemakers. I don't have as good results when I make a potful, although the cone is rated to make an 8-12 cup pot. I find that the length of time it takes for the water to drip through produces warm, not hot, coffee, and perhaps a little more bitter in flavor. I think it may be that I need to use a coarser grind of coffee, and a warming plate would help with the temperature issue.
The cone is heavy porcelain, so it stays put on top of a mug or carafe -- a slight bump while pouring won't knock it off. A flat lip around the bottom of the cone rests on the rim of the mug or carafe, and the rounded bump protruding from the bottom where the three holes are also helps to hold the cone in place. The cone fits all my mug styles (mostly 12 oz. or smaller) as well as the 12-cup carafe from my Mr. Coffee. It has an ergonomic handle, and the shiny porcelain surface washes up easily.
In my opinion you can't beat the flavor of coffee made with the pour-over method. The HIC Filter Cone gets it done very conveniently and economically.
* Works
* Flow rate just right with finely ground coffee
* Sturdy
* Amazon Prime eligible
CONS:
* Made in China (which makes me wonder if this been tested for lead leaching?)
* Doesn't add that nice plastic taste of a plastic dripper. (OOPS maybe that should be a PRO.)
Review:
After reading the reviews on this HIC Porcelain Coffee Filter Cone I decided to go with the #4 vice the #2 size as I wanted it to fit on top of my coffee mug. The #4 fits just right as it has a nice wide sturdy base. I don't use a pouring stand, but who knows maybe in the future I just may splurge and get one. The easies way for me to do coffee with this is to put my cold water in my mug, then from the mug to my wok to heat the water. While the water is heating I grind the coffee fine and put it into a filter which is already in my HIC Porcelain Coffee Filter Cone. Then all on top of my mug. Pour hot water into the HIC Porcelain Coffee Filter Cone and it takes about 1.5mins to drain into my cup for coffee... YUM
When I bought this HIC Porcelain Coffee Filter Cone I was worried that my coffee would just run through the filter and get a watery blend like many people have mentioned. This may have happened if I used regular grind, but as I use fine grind I have really seen no appreciable difference between the flow rate of this and my old plastic dripper. By the way my plastic coffee filter cone had four holes, but they were smaller in diameter than this one. Oh by the way I wasn't kidding about tasting different, the coffee for some reason taste cleaner out of this dripper. Hard to explain, but you will see what I am talking about.
Like I said my only concern is LEAD. I remember hearing about lead issues in porcelain coming from China before, but figure they should have it fixed by now. Maybe the vendor will test for lead and get back to us on this HIC Porcelain Coffee Filter Cone.
This little cone is the perfect solution. It doesn't stain, rinses out quickly and cleanly, and best of all, it's NOT PLASTIC! It's heavy and sturdy and feels like a real coffee maker. It looks classy in the kitchen. It's inexpensive. What more could you want? Besides a butler or maid to make the coffee for you, I mean. If you gotta do it yourself, use this. It's a great investment in your happiness and well-being.
I use the Number 2 filters with it; the Number 1's felt a bit small to me even though they fit. I'm a bit sloppy and make very strong coffee so the Number 2 filters make me feel more secure.
