Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing - Nintendo Wii
About this item
- In a frantic battle to the checkered flag, Sonic and friends speed around tracks set in mediaeval castle ramparts, lush rainforests and bustling cities, all taken from the visually rich and varied universes of Sonic and SEGA.
- Secret short cuts, swift handling and avoiding strategically placed obstacles are certainly the best way to get to the top of the podium…
- Each character has a specific All Star move – such as Super Sonic, Banana Blitz and Tails Tornado – that allows a quick way for competitors to get back into the race!
- Power ups and weapons can also be collected around the tracks and used against the opposition to ensure they don’t become a threat to that number one position.
- Battle it out in single or multiplayer mode, allowing up to four friends to race in frantic split-screen action, or up to eight players to compete online in the ultimate racing showdown.

Product Description
In a frantic battle to the checkered flag, Sonic and friends speed around tracks set in medieval castle ramparts, lush rainforests and bustling cities, all taken from the visually rich and varied universes of Sonic and SEGA. Fan favourites such as Dr. Eggman, Tails, AiAi, Amigo and many more will join Sonic in their custom built vehicles, revving their engines and jostling to stay ahead of the pack. Each character will speed around the track in cars, planes, motorbikes, and in Aiai’s case – a banana mobile! Secret short cuts, swift handling and avoiding strategically placed obstacles are certainly the best way to get to the top of the podium…
But winning is only part of the fun in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing! Each character has a specific All Star move – such as Super Sonic, Banana Blitz and Tails Tornado – that allows a quick way for competitors to get back into the race! Power ups and weapons can also be collected around the tracks and used against the opposition to ensure they don’t become a threat to that number one position.
Battle it out in single or multiplayer mode, allowing up to four friends to race in frantic split-screen action, or up to eight players to compete online in the ultimate racing showdown.
Can Amigo scramble Dr. Eggman? Will AiAi say bye-bye to Tails? Are you gonna be faster than Sonic?

In comparing it with Mario Kart, the graphics are definitely different. In this one, it's a bit more overpowering for the eyes & I find myself going cross-eyed for a second. We were constantly beating the tracks in Mario Kart, but the ones in Sonic Sega All-Stars Racing are more competitive with the computer withOUT an unfair advantage against the person in the lead. In Mario, when you were 1st in a race, you'd fear for the attacks that would come... bullets, obstacles, and bombs that could be directed at you from 12th place. In Sonic, with 8 players, that doesn't happen! I believe there is one special missile one of the characters can shoot occasionally that will go for the person in the lead, but also stuns everyone else it passes.
PROS:
*We found it a bit more of a challenge than Mario Kart
*The character in the lead is in NO more danger of being knocked out of the race than any of the other characters.
*When you drive off the side of a cliff, it is quick to get you back on track.
*Drift is fun! Hold A & B at the same time to accomplish drift in Sonic. When the Remote shakes, let go of drift & you'll speed ahead!
CONS (but with practice, all of these became comfortable & soon could be added to the PROS list - updated 2/21/14):
*The characters weren't as familiar or reminiscently old style to me as Mario, but that's just me.
*Graphics are disorienting at first.
*Some of the tracks are VERY difficult, and require you to carefully navigate the winding road with breaks & drift often.
*Competition is fierce & one wrong move can send you to the back of the pack.
*The battle mode wasn't as fun - as battles are only between live players and computer players couldn't be included. As a result, battle is only possible with the live multiplayer option.
BOTH:
*You can unlock new tracks. In Sonic, you can also unlock new characters & music.
The price is right, the tracks are fun, and there are features I have yet to explore. Battle is fun, but there aren't as many arenas in which to battle (compared with Mario). There is also a "capture the flag" version & a few others... I'll let you know what I think when they're played. After a week of the game, my entire family is still very pleased! :) Even more to explore, unlock, and race.
As for the game itself? SOOO much fun! I initially thought that the announcer would start to annoy me, but he doesn't. As you might expect, especially going by other reviewers' comments on the sense of humour embedded in the game, he's a bit of a smart alec, but it's all in good fun, and truly makes this game feel like an actual racing game. Having heard an announcer giving a race play-by-play in THIS game, I realized just a short while into my first hour of gameplay that I miss having an announcer in the Mario Kart game doing the same.
I was never much of a SEGA game player, so I recognize some of the characters here, but others are totally foreign to me. Doesn't matter, and I don't find myself missing the very familiar Nintendo characters from Mario Kart. As you might expect, not all of the characters shown in the trailers and start up movie for this game are immediately available, but are easily "purchased" in the "store" feature of the game. After having played for said hour, I had acquired enough SEGA "miles" to purchase two characters from the middle of the price range displayed. Perfectly satisfactory payoff for me, especially after a super fun, stress-relieving game played on beginner difficulty (I have enough stress in my day-to-day life; when it comes to video gaming, easy & super fun is totally my speed). But don't worry; if you are a very competitive gamer that likes a real challenge, I have no doubt that the more difficult levels will scratch that itch for you. Since I don't happen to have that same itch, though, I'm perfectly happy playing as I have been!
I actually had to make myself stop playing this game, so that I could get everything prepped for my work day tomorrow, but I'm already thinking about sitting down for another SEGA racing session. SO fun, and at less than a twenty note right now, this game CANNOT be beat! Think I might have to pick up a few more copies for some of my other friends!
