After careful research here and in Consumer Reports, we decided to find a bagged vacuum under $200. In that price category, this Hoover is a great buy based on our first experiences with it. Despite being similar in specs (both 12-amp, bagged, etc.) the difference between the Hoover and our old vacuum made both my wife and I laugh out loud when we first tried the new one. It is astonishing how poorly our old one was performing. Hopefully this one will stay strong and problem-free over time. I will report back if anything bad happens.
Thus far we have used the new vac to clean the whole house a couple times, including stairs and attachment use. My time is valuable and limited, so making the effort to leave this review says that I'm pretty pleased with my purchase.
PRO - very strong suction, spinning brush head on hose attachment (works by air-power--better than expected), feels light when in use, power button is easy to reach with thumb. The on/off for the brush bar works great. We ordered extra belts to have on hand. They are actual rubber belts as compared to the weird ribbon belt that the Eureka uses. The bag comes out attached to the front panel of the vac, which you can then carry serving tray style to the trash bin--no trying not to squeeze the bag while removing it for fear of dust billowing out. Also, the wheels are rubber and there is a good rubber strip around the edge of the vacuum head to protect furniture.
CON - no review should be totally without some criticism. The hose extension wand is a two-piece affair that can be extended and turn-locked. The locking mechanism is a friction design and is pretty weak, even when new, and tends to allow the wand to collapse if you push too hard against something when using the crevice tool or other attachment. It isn't as good as two connecting wand parts that cannot collapse. It isn't a terrible problem, but if you do a *ton* of hose/wand work, you may want to try before you buy. That is the only thing our old Eureka did better than this Hoover.
We have newer carpet that has been vacuumed many times with our old vac. After using the new one, I couldn't believe how much carpet fiber was picked up that the old machine left behind. I went through two bags the first time I used it, so it doesn't just seem to be more powerful, it really is.
I added a product image showing old and new.

Update 7 months after purchase: Still going strong, and I like it enough to take the time to return for an update. The front collector tends to clog a bit with carpet fibers and such, but there are three easy clips to remove the bottom plate, allowing for easy clean-out using the attachment hose. Also, the front is clear so you can easily see if this maintenance is needed. We're still very happy with this upright vacuum cleaner.
I wish vacuums were made with a larger bag and/or a bag compartment that allowed use of the whole bag. This seems to be common among all cleaners, so it's either a design requirement or a way to sell more bags, I'm not sure. Maybe a weight concern? Regardless, more bag capacity one way or another would be nice.

Things I like
1. the power button is on the handle.
2. Its BAGGED. Im SO DONE with bagless and the entire mess.
3. you can tell when the bag needs to be changed. there is an indicator. Not sure how it works. its not a light. But its got a new bag and its green. I assume it revolves to red when the bag is full?
5. multiple height settings.
6. peddle press on the base to switch from carpet to linoleum/hardwoods
7. the cord is super long. I can do my whole house by plugging it in near the center. Im in a small ranch style home
8. great suction on carpet
Things I do not like
1. its red. why manufacturers only offer a vacuum model in one color is beyond me
2. its heavier than expected or rather as compared to my $50.00 red devil. I went with this model instead of self propelled because I feared if the self propelled function ever went out Id never be able to push it. This isnt as easy as Id hoped for an old chick like me but Ill adjust. its not that bad. Im just whining because now I have to put a little back into it. lol
3. the foot peddle switch to go from floors to carpet isnt obvious as to which mode you are in. I couldn't even push the vacuum across the carpet when it was on bare floor mode and had no idea that was the problem. Once I figured that out pushing was easier. Id rather have a light as an indicator please.
4. It does not clean edges near the baseboard (as I remember vacuums could do when I was a young one). but to be fair Ive yet to find a vacuum that does do as well anymore. So Ill be using the canister vacuum I bought for the edge work or using the attachments that came with this hoover to do edge work. Haven't tried the hand tools yet. If they also can't do edge work next to floor boards and do not suck properly Ill be back to amend my review.
5. it really does NOT do bare floors very well. And again its been my experience that most uprights don't. Ill be sticking with the canister vacuum for my bare floors. Honestly if my little canister vacuum were not so hard to push across the carpet I wouldn't need this upright.
WHY manufacturers cant get one vacuum that can do it all and not cost a fortune is beyond me. But having the two that I do have (one upright and one canister) was far less than one of the more spendy machines (which frankly dont get that high of a review as far as I could tell based on consumer reports).
I did purchase this model after reading consumer reports. So unless they are paid to say something is what it is not Ill guess that the other vacuums with lower ratings were not as good as this one. Or that the rating was based on value against the price.
If this were in any color I loved, and could vacuum smack up to the baseboard (like we did in the olden days), Id give it 5 stars. As A lower priced model I consider I got what I paid for. good suction on carpets.
Have not evaluated the hand tools yet. If those are superior to my last upright I might just come back and up the rating to 5.
