Product Description

The Ultimate Backpacking Stove

Why Solo Stove?
All Solo Stoves burn hotter fires using less fuel with Solo Stove’s patented design and unique secondary combustion. Our lightweight and compact wood burning stoves are recommended by Backpacker Magazine and serious survivalists including Discovery Channel's Matt Graham. Solo Stove won the Gear of the Year award from 50 Campfires & Section Hiker and is a must have for all serious backpackers, survivalists, and campers.

Unique Airflow System
Designed with a double wall, the Solo Stove has unique airflow properties which makes it extremely efficient. The air intake holes on the bottom of the stove channel air to the bottom of the fire while at the same time, channels warm air up between the walls of the stove. This burst of preheated oxygen feeding back into the firebox through the smaller holes at the top of the stove causes a secondary combustion. This allows the fire to burn more complete which is why there is very little smoke during full burn. A more efficient burn also means you'll use much less wood compared to an open camp fire.

High quality but at high altitude, it's too much work

High quality but at high altitude, it's too much work
I wanted so bad to love this product!. The construction is very high quality and the idea is awesome.I took the SoloStove into the High Uintas backpacking for 3 days, elevation 10,550'. I was so excited to not worry about fuel. I was able to find plenty of sticks and kept them dry in a ziplock bag. I was cooking for myself and my two boys. I was excited to be able to cook instead of just boiling water since fuel was not an issue. First meal was Kraft Mac and cheese. I got my fire started and settled in for the water boil part, 4 cups. Over a half hour later... I had boiling water. I underestimated the sheer amount of sticks I would need. With the boil done I was now on to boiling the macaroni and that went as expected, I didn't really need to keep a strong rolling boil going, especially since I was using a lot less water than normal. I need to mention that I really liked the pot. It was a pleasure to use. Next meal was breakfast, boil water for oatmeal (4 cups). 37 minutes later.... Boiling water. Uggg. The process was way too time consuming and a LOT of work sitting there feeding the fire. The fire would burn great, then fizzle out. I had a very hard time keeping a constant hot flame. It is a razor thin balancing act. It is somewhat of a gasifier system so at a certain point if the fuel is stacked too high, it won't burn, to low, it goes out. It's not hard to get going again but it is time and heat lost. The wood I was able to gather was mildly damp. It's the Uintas, I don't think anything gets fully dry. The next meal, soup, didn't happen on the solo. My kids were about to stage a mutiny if I took 40 minutes to boil water. So, I relented and borrowed another campers Whisperlite. The solo pot is awesome and I used it on the Whisperlite.Summary, if you have the time, it's a quality product. It think it would be awesome for emergencies or where the weight of fuel doesn't make sense. However, if you are hungry, or in a hurry, you will be frustrated. I think if they made one out of titanium and fine tuned the airflow to maximizing the gasifier AND put a low opening in so you can feed it long sticks, I would give it 5 stars. It's not a bad product, just takes too long to boil. Maybe it is just the high altitude, I don't know. Another thing to note is that the pot does get very blackened with soot.Message to SoloStove: I am happy to revisit this stove at over 10,000' again if you make enhancing changes to this stove. Contact me. Like I said, I really want to love this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product!
Reviewed in Canada on May 14, 2016
This stove surprised me. I had done some research and most people were saying there is a learning curve to twig stoves and to expect your first boil to take 20-30 min but that you will get that down under 10 once you figure them out. My first burn I had 2 cups of water to a rapid boil in 8:45. They are way easier to use than some people may have you believe. The weight is manageable and it is a couple ounces lighter than a pocket rocket with a full fuel canister (8oz) plus the weight of a pot. The best part is fuel is pretty much available anywhere. Even in the rain I was able to get fuel to boil water. Once it is lit there is a lot of heat which will dry out damp wood. Great product.
