I've been using this brewer for a month now and have had no performance issues -- works great. Brews a great cup of coffee.
Water Temp: The water temperature after dispensing (using the hot water drawer) into a pre-heated mug is 186°F. Keep in mind this is not an adiabatic system so there is heat transfer/loss with surrounding mediums (e.g. plastics of the brewer drawers, coffee grounds, mug walls, air, etc.). Regardless of the brewer, the water temperature measured in the reservoir is always going to be higher than that dispensed for this reason. The fact that this brewer maintains the water temperature about 8°F higher than its competitor suggests BUNN tried to account for this heat loss...which probably explains why most people think (including me) the coffee tastes better.
Largest Mug Size: The largest coffee mug I use is a 16oz Thermos SS King travel tumbler (7" high and 3" mouth diameter). This size mug is compatible with all the drawers, with the drip tray removed; anything taller -- or the same height with a smaller mouth diameter -- is not going to be compatible. Installing the drip tray subtracts about 1-1/4 inches from the allowable height. This mug exhibits the closest fit with the K-cup drawer, requiring a additional care when removing the mug, but stills allows a full 16oz of coffee to be dispensed without immersing the K-cup drawer, or resulting in spillage during removal (due to tipping the mug to remove it). I honestly don't know why one would want to brew 16oz of coffee using a K-cup to begin with, but know that you can if you want to.
**ORIGINAL**
BLUF: The MCU has an "industrial" look to it, but has a smaller form factor and provides just as may options as a Keurig...without the hassle of "official" K-cups, or K-cup adapters. It also provides the capability to accomplish other tasks requiring hot water (instant oatmeal, tea, etc.).
I've been using a Keurig B70 Platinum for the last 5 years or so. I quickly became disenchanted with the price of K-cups, all be it they were convenient. In 2013 I purchased the Solofill 3 so I could use my own brand of ground coffee. Anticipating that my Keurig will experience some sort of catastrophic failure after 5 years, I started searching for a new one. Low and behold the Keurig 2.0 - which now scans the K-cup to make sure it's "official"!?! This turned me away from the Keurig brand FOREVER.
I researched single-serve coffee makers and found the BUNN MCU. Compared it to other brands, read the reviews, and decided I would try it. After all, I've never known a BUNN to make bad coffee (even if the grounds were re-used, and half of those replaced with chewing tobacco).
I've only been using the MCU for the last couple of days, but here is my input, which I will update if issues arise:
I've not experienced any of the "quality" issues that other reviewers have complained of. I attribute most of such reviews to "operator error". I'm not saying it's complicated, just not fool-proof like some have found other single-serve coffee makers to be. Do your research (e.g. visit the BUNN website and watch the videos) and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! Upon receiving the MCU, I promptly checked the sprayhead and its seal for proper installation and tightness. Other reviewers complained of the MCU leaking during use, for which this is a common cause. I've had no issues with leaking.
READING THE INSTRUCTIONS, I performed the initial setup. Now, given that there are only two buttons ("brew" and "pulse"), each with a status light, as well as "indicator" light, things would appear to be simple...and they were during the initial setup. After reading through the rest of the instructions and discovering that MCU has seven (7) different status states indicated via a combination of only two lights (brew and indicator) - come again!?! - I found myself wanting for a decoder ring. My advice...don't lose the manual. I broke it down to these four states: Green "Indicator" = Good-to-Go; Red "Indicator" = Sleeping/or "Be Patient, the MCU is Warming Up"; Red "Brew" = Brewing; Red "Pulse" = Pulse-flow Mode is ON. Everything else...refer to the manual.
Keep this in mind: this machine is always on. If you are extremely energy conscience and don't like "vampire lights" in your house, this is not the machine for you since it also maintains a 14 oz. water reservoir at 200°F. While the status of the machine via the various combination of lights may not be simple, the overall operation and maintenance is. It goes to "sleep" after six (6) hours, and "hibernates" after 26 hours. The hot water tank holds 14 oz. of water and maintains the brewing temperature up to six hours. In between the six and 26 hours, the MCU needs about one (1) minute to warm-up, which is triggered by one inserting one of the four drawers. Similarly, after 26 hours it needs about two (2) minutes to warm-up (same as a Keurig).
The ground coffee (or tea leaf) drawer has two filter screens: one for the water (to keep the grounds from going everywhere); the second for the coffee extract. The second filter (extract) screen is removable, and I find that it filters much better than that of the Solofill 3. This drawer also holds 20 grams of coffee, which is much more than two (2) Tbsp's, and more than the Solofill 3. The K-cup drawer is nice, but unless I'm brewing hot chocolate I don't plan on using it EVER again (but it's nice to have and I acknowledge it). Combine this with the ability to select from 4 to 14 oz. and there is plenty of variability to allow one to become a "brew master". As I said, the hot water tank holds 14 oz, but outputs the same amount of water you add each time for brewing.
After brewing, the ground coffee drawer does drip for a while, which others have complained about. Given that the MCU keeps the water 200°F, I personally, am not in a hurry to grab my mug and start drinking the caffeinated goodness that awaits. I found it takes on average about 30 seconds for drips to stop, which is normally accompanied by a "depressurization" (?) sound from the drawer...be patient and wait 30 to 60 seconds. Also, Cleaning the drawer is as simple as the Solofill 3...I turn it upside-down and give it a stern (but gentle) whack on the counter to loosen the grounds and then dump the grounds in a waist bin (I use a one gallon coffee can lined with a plastic bag). Make sure you keep your finger on the "latch" of the door containing the first screen or you'll have coffee grounds everywhere. Rinse the entire drawer free of any remaining grinds. At the end of the day I pop out the second screen and rinse it to remove any residue.
The MCU does have four different drawers to allow you to accomplish multiple tasks requiring hot water, e.g. brewing tea, making instant oatmeal or instant noodles, etc., but if you owned a Keurig you probably figured out how to do this already anyway...so at least one of the drawers you will likely never use; however, even accounting for storage space for the four drawers and the MCU, this machine still requires less space than a large Keurig, and so, no harm done.
Don't like: slight drip after brewing cycle ends
I have been using an automatic drip maker for many, many years and loved the convenience - set it up at night, get up in the morning, flip a switch and 10-15 minutes later there's my pot of coffee. Refill? Easy enough. Taste? Meh, it's okay. I am not a coffee connoisseur, if coffee isn't stale or bitter, I can drink it.
We bought this Bunn machine to replace a thermal carafe Hamilton Beach coffee maker. I don't like glass pots on a warming plate, the coffee always seems to smell and taste burnt to me. The Hamilton Beach was/is a great coffee maker but, even with the thermal carafe, the only cup that was nearly hot enough was the one poured immediately after brewing.
The Bunn My Cafe MCU took a bit of getting used to (and a slight learning curve), but the small effort has been well worth it. After the initial set-up (the learning curve), it has been quite easy to use. Every beverage that we've made with it has truly been piping hot! And I can really taste the difference when I use different coffees! That is something I am still getting used to, and it has been a very pleasant learning experience! Another thing to get used to - cleaning the ground drawer out as soon as it is used so that it is ready for the next person. For a 2 person household, it is a common courtesy, and honestly, even when it is just me using the machine, I still clean the ground drawer as soon as the cycle is finished. I want it to be ready for my next cup and it takes less than a minute to do. Additional drawers can be ordered from Bunn if this is an issue for someone.
We've used the all the drawers (pod, K-cup, ground coffee, hot water) and have not had any issues or problems. The pulse option insures a hot, bold brew. No problem with cups fitting under the various drawers, but I have not tried to use a travel mug with the K-cup drawer, but I have used one with the ground drawer. I just removed the metal plate that the you would set a regular mug on, and the travel cup fit perfectly.
The Bunn My Cafe is a fair bit smaller than the machine we had been using and fits nicely on the counter. We keep the drawers in a basket in the cupboard above it.
Before I bought this machine I read reviews that reported it took longer to heat water than say, a Keurig. I have not used a Keurig so I am not in a position to compare that point, but I do know this, when I put the ground drawer on at night before I go to bed, that movement seems to turns on the green ready-to-use light. It is still on in the morning when I pour my water in and I have my coffee in less than a minute. So I don't understand how it takes longer to heat the water. Reviews also often list the lack of a large reservoir as a negative. I don't have a problem pouring cold, fresh water into the machine. That adds what, a few seconds to the time it takes to get a good cup of hot coffee? Another 'negative' I read in reviews was about the noise the machine makes. This thing makes very little noise in my opinion. And it lasts for less than a minute. Really? My Hamilton Beach was noisier longer (10 cups longer!).
The only thing I don't love about this machine is the drip that I get after the brew cycle has completed. Sometimes it will drip for a few seconds, sometimes longer. I just stick another cup under it until I get the drawer out and empty the grounds. I tried leaving the drawer in with the cup under it to see how much coffee dripped out. There wasn't much drip accumulation (less than 1/2 a teaspoon), but I'd rather rinse a cup out than take out trays to rinse and dry. Which isn't a big deal either.
All in all, after only using this machine for about 3 or 4 days, I am quite happy with it. Bunn My Cafe may not be for everyone, but it was definitely the right choice for me.
Top reviews from other countries
It can produce a little over a Second Cup X-large grande serving coffee. It cannot brew a carafe. It has one great feature lacking in most machines, and that it can pulse percolate (it will flow some hot water, pause a moment, and continue in this manner until the water is used up). You control the coffee brewing amount, by the amount of water you fill the machine with. If you make a mistake, and want to stop short, you simply press on the brew button and it will stop.
The coffee that it produces is very hot. Hot enough that even if you add cold milk or cold creme, the coffee is still boiling hot. Something that you cannot get in any other k-cup brewing machine, even the original one's made by Keurig.
* the machine comes with many adaptors. You can brew coffee grinds that you insert in the coffee grind brew head, and there is space to add a lot of coffee if want to make it strong. You have another coffee pod, that accepts coffee pods that are packaged like tea bags, only that they are round shaped coffee filled pouches. Their is also the k-cup coffee pod, for your Keurig compatible machines. There's a fourth adaptor, not sure what you can brew with it, but I believe it to be an adaptor so as to brew hot water.
It's a shame that there is no official ON and OFF button or switch. I decided to use the coffee maker with a power bar that has an ON and OFF switch. I will then use my Wi-Fi controlled timer controller (you can program custom turn on, turn off sequence for each day of the week, and monitor it by wifi if need be if it is on) when I bring it inside (I use a wifi controlled timer control for my outdoor block heater on my SUV) and set it to go on and off in the morning for me so that the machine is primed and ready to go.
For the cost of the machine, I cannot wrap my head around the fact that BUNN could of added a simple electronic clock timer ON and Off LCD / LED display to control the machine and to be programmed to turn ON or OFF automatically.
1. Can brew pod coffee/tea: I use teabags in the morning and it's so much quicker to make tea on this machine then microwaving hot water. Also the flavour is better because of the pulse mode!
2. Can brew hot water: For just that, I use it for soups
3. Keurig pod coffee: I already have a Tassimo T65 machine (which is great btw) but I wanted a Keurig so I could try out the many flavours that are not available for my Tassimo. Now I have both, which is great
4. Can brew loose leaf tea and ground coffee: I normally used a kettle and french press for this purpose, and still do when brewing for a party, but now I can have a quick single cup. The pulsed flavour is actually better than the french press.
As far as the machine goes, it has a really good look to it, it's great that it keeps the water warm and has an energy saver feature. With the water kept warm, it starts brewing almost immediately after the button is pressed! Really great
The two year warranty and Bunn's reputation as an industrial brand make for a good addition to the kitchen.
I would definitely recommend!
-It's easy to get the exact size beverage you want (anywhere from 4oz to 16oz).
-The coffee that comes out is actually boiling hot (unlike Keurig).
-Multiple trays for K-cups, tea bags, loose tea/coffee, hot water is super convenient. Eliminates the need to own a kettle also!
-It's made from mostly stainless steel instead of ugly plastic so it's durable and spiffy looking.
-Water stays boiling hot and ready to go in reservoir for 6 hours before needing to be reheated! Energy efficient.
-Pulse brewing option to get stronger coffee/tea is a major plus also.
Best single serve coffee maker I've owned by far.
It does get a bit hotter though than other coffee makers it seems. A bit too hot for an ideal cup, mostly this is a matter of preference, but worth considering it if you know how you like your coffee.
