ORIGINAL****Works good and I was super pumped about these but the tulip one will not go on no matter how hard I try or how gentle or position or anything but the other full round one went on like a glove.
There is a slight vignette at 18, but can be adjusted out.
I was pleasantly surprised at the excellent quality of these hoods! Thanks, Altura!
Then comes the tulip shaped hood, which has a front that can be lined up so that the petals are in a pius-sign position. First, it's a bit difficult to make the thread pitches meet and screw the hood, and once they get together, they're very tight. Since the tulip hood is smaller, the chances of vignetting are lower, but they're still there. That's my reason for the four-star review. Otherwise I'd give it a 5-star rating.
I am planning on using the rubber hood for now, because it's flexible and it may not break easily. The tulip hood looks definitely cooler and interesting, but since I'm on the side of practicality, I'll see the results I get from using the rubber hood. If I find myself having to adjust it constantly because it's been collapsed all the way in, I may reverse my decision and use the plastic hood. We'll see... I have some months to evaluate before revisiting this review and writing my update.
First off, everyone should know that if you're using a wide angle lens, you're already risking getting knuckles and other bits into the sides of pictures, so everyone should be prepared to crop their photos to eliminate vignetting.
Rubber Lens Hood. This hood connects to my lens perfectly and allows the use of a lens cap. Build is solid. It does collect dust because it's rubber so if that's a deal breaker than obviously get something that is solid plastic or metal. Vignetting is terrible when hood is fully extended but very usable when collapsed.
Tulip Lens Hood. I really wanted to love this, as it's what I was really after when I purchased the pair, but there is something wrong with the threading. As is, when connecting to my lens it sits rather loose and is very easy to over tighten and cause the hood to pop off the lens entirely. To make things more odd, I have the 67mm ND filter kit from Altura that works perfectly with my lens. The hood has trouble connecting to my lens, but screws into the filters with no problem and feels very solid. With the filter attached, the hood is extended and does cause slight vignetting even in APS-C crop mode. Another problem is that the tulip hood will not accept a lens cap.
I don't think the vignetting on wide angle focal lengths is a deal breaker, but overall I think I'd rather have a different hood; preferably one made of metal or a denser plastic. I don't plan on dropping my gear, but I know for certain that the tulip lens is getting destroyed if it ever meets concrete. Honestly, for $10 I didn't expect much and will put these through the ringer either way. If you need something quick and cheap it could work for you as well, just don't expect it to be a permanent addition.
