After watching a few YouTube videos, I dug in and changed it out. Took less than two hours start to finish, including an hour for the tank to drain and one trip to the hardware for a new pipe nipple. Fired right up and runs great. Saved a bundle doing it myself.
Note that there are multiple versions of these which have different gas output pressures, different probe lengths, and different gas line offsets, so make sure you're ordering the same version you already have. I suspect a lot of returns are from people that don't understand the WT and WV, 8840 and 8860, and 1000/1250/1500 versions are all differences and the various combinations are generally not interchangeable.
Pro tip for anyone replacing any version of these if you don't want to drain your water heater: you can remove one screw and pop the cover off by pressing a flathead screwdriver on the top clips, then remove one more screw and the gas valve will pop out of the housing by pressing the two tabs in the bottom corners. I removed the cover, gas valve, and temp sensor but left the back of the housing in the water heater. I swapped the new parts into the original backing which was still captive in the water heater, then reassembled. So long as your unit is not leaking at the water heater threads (which is probably true for 99% of people) this saves you from having to empty your water heater. It's especially helpful if your drain valve is frozen or if you don't have a good place to drain the huge tank. Total replacement time was about 20 minutes.
After watching some YouTube videos about troubleshooting, I was able to figure out that my gas valve was bad.
Pilot did not stay lit. Checked thermoswitch and thermocouple. Checked valve and pilot valve was inoperable.
I have Bradford White 40 gal heater.
This job was not very hard to do.
I also flushed my heater and replaced drain valve with full port valve, since I needed to drain the tank.
Again, make sure you did troubleshooting first and don't just randomly replace the parts. All you need is a multimeter.
