When I saw people rating this one star before I purchased, I was pretty wary of this game on the Switch. What a lot of the reviewers don't consider is this game was built around PC gaming, slightly dumbed down for the current gen consoles, and now stripped even further to run on the switch. And that things considered, it's not bad at all. If you're expecting this to mimic the performance and quality of even a PS4 or Xbox One, you're going to be disappointed; I don't think it's possible to run a game like this at that high of quality on a system like the Switch. I mean arguably my Galaxy S8 had more processing power than the Switch.
I've seen gameplay on PCs, and yeah, this isn't near as clean as what the PC puts out, or even on beefier consoles. The frame rate is up there, but probably hovers around 50 fps. Dirt effects are very limited, as is the draw distance for certain objects and shadows. And some of the textures are more blurry than they would be on a different platform. The rider field seems cut in half, at least it's how it is from the start of the career mode. I'm positive this is due to the limited processing, and is understandable.
Now, here's the stuff I wish people would focus on. First, the customization is insane in this game. The amount of parts, gear, and components is crazy, and the licensing to all the manufacturers is such a refreshment after the terrible run of MX vs ATV games. Rider and bike movements are as realistic as I've seen, and this is very true-to-life. Yes, it's a game so sometimes things go weird. But I can't imagine how difficult it is to replicate the erratic movements of motocross. The bike sounds are the best I've heard as well, much better than past versions, and miles ahead of what MX vs ATV games were doing until recently.
As someone who used to race MX, and as a big fan of racing games in general, this ticks a lot of boxes. Milestone seem to be the only developers bringing their 2 wheel racing games to the Switch, and I'm thankful for that.
If you enjoy motocross racing, and know the sport well, you will be able to sink into the meat of this and have a good time. If you're someone who likes to smash and grab, I doubt you will tolerate the need for patience required for this game.
Five stars!
I am now addicted to this game. As a motocross racer, gamer, and switch fan boy, this is everything I needed on the go.
First thing you need to do is change the physics to pro. After a short learning period, the bike will handle really well. Next, change your view to first person. The grapics change dramatically. I have been playing it exclusively in handheld mode, and I am so happy I bought it now.
If you love motocross and you have a Switch, buy this game and set it up properly. It is absolutely worth it!
Note to developer: If you put the track deformation in (like the Xbox One version), I will change my review to five stars!
I was really looking forward to this one and it is close because the gameplay is pretty good, but man the graphics for the rider need some work.
