About this item
- Ubiquiti UVC-NVR-2TB UniFi Plug & Play NVR stands for Network Video Recorder. Essentially, the Ubiquiti Networks UVC-NVR is a plug-and-play recording appliance with low power consumption and offers UniFi Video’s powerful IP surveillance software for a modern, easy approach to home, school, or work surveillance.
- This recorder manages the UniFi Video Cameras that are set up with it - in this case, the UniFi G3-MICRO wireless camera - and records video according to rules set up in the software. The UniFi Video software is pre-installed for quick and easy deployment wherever and whenever you need it. Best of all, therefore no additional software is required. You can do everything through a highly functional Ubiquiti surveillance bundle!
- Setup is a breeze - simply plug the recorder into the network, go through the handy configuration wizard, and the installation is done. It's easy to manage storage of the video footage, as you can designate what space to use for recording, and there's easy date based features for when footage is deleted - say after a number of days. You can also send content to external USB or network storage drives. The recorder can connect up to 50 UniFi Video Cameras and support cameras at multiple locations.
- What's in the Box: One (1) UniFi G3-MICRO wireless camera with UVC-Micro base, power adapter, flat base plate, corner base plate, mounting tape, 5 screws, 5 screw anchors and 6 cable clips; One UVC-NVR-2TB recorder with a vertical support stand, power adapter (19V, 3.42A), power cord, four feet magnetic rubber, and quick start guide. The recorder comes equipped with the Intel D2550 processor.

Inside, I wanted a small camera to keep track of our cat when we were be away. I started with an Ouvis camera, which was great until they upgraded their app and made it useless. Then I got a Panasonic HD camera, which was good but the Android app ate battery and the IOS app stopped communicating. In addition, it seemed to take forever to connect to the cameras. I then got a Blackbox S which never worked right, the geofencing only occasionally worked, most of the time it never turned on the camera when we left the area. When it did work, the camera faced in a different position. It missed many true motion events and notifications stopped. Then the apps couldn't connect anymore. We returned it.
We decided to splurge on this camera. My plan was to run the NVR software first to see how things worked before I bought the hardware NVR. My server runs OmniOS so I set up a LX Zone to run it. I tried Debian and Ubuntu images but I couldn't get it to run successfully. I have a Centos 7 desktop, so I ran the docker image, but that wasn't successful at finding the camera. I have a windows 10 laptop, so I tried it there. This time it was successful, so I installed it on a Windows 10 desktop for testing.
Bottom line is that this camera is really solid. It has a few false positives similar to the EagleEye system. Specifically, changes in lighting caused by the sun peeking in and out behind clouds or switching lights nearby in the house will set it off. The change from normal to IR mode or back will set it off. However, it is rock solid at catching the cat with notifications and emails. I especially like the pictures in the email. it seems to find a really good representative shot and the alerts come much quicker.
I have a little more experimenting to do but it looks like this camera is a keeper and I will pick up the hardware so I don't need the desktop running all the time or try to figure out why the software doesn't run on my server.
The Pros:
Good Quality Video
Email alerts with great picture.
Videos don't go to the cloud
Good selection of mounting options
The Cons:
Way too long power cord (don't know where to hide all of it).
Need separate software to store video.
Not as many options as competing cameras (geofencing, etc.)
Can not use app or NVR with non-Unifi cameras.
If you don't have a CloudKey Gen 2, then there are probably less expensive options that will work just as well. These are worth the price as part of the UniFi ecosystem, but not standalone.
With that said, the thing that caused me to write this review is to comment on one unique and unusual feature of this camera. The camera itself magnetically mounts to its base. But what this means is that any time someone can reach up and just pull the camera off of the base. In other words - the camera is two separate pieces -- one is the base which you can hard mount to a wall, the other is the camera unit which only is connected magnetically. Its a really clever design that allows for great articulation, but it has me nervous that someone is going to just yank the camera down and walk off with it.
Pro:
- They work as intended, really easy setup for the most part
- They are capable of 5 GHz wifi, so there is plenty of bandwidth with a properly sized / deployed wifi network
- Loads of options within the box for both power and mounting
Con:
- I wish these were native POE. There is an injector, but I rather just run cables directly to them without an injector (the injector is tiny, inline - I am now just being picky)
That is ironically the only point of contention with the camera. The original camera had an innovative design for the wall wort where the extra cordage could be coiled around the wort and then hidden with a slide cover. It kept things neat, especially considering the generous amount of cable length provided by the power adapter. That however is a minor nit pick and the picture quality of this camera is fantastic compared to the 1st generation.

Mounted three of these cameras above cribs like in the photo. Can see the babies when they’re sleeping. Camera provides audio. When paired with an Apple TV and a big screen TV you can monitor the babies easily.
