Four stars because the spark plug was NOT the correct one for this engine! Too short. So I ultrasonic cleaned the old plug (thanks neighbor Lee) and reused it.
Take pictures of your setup before removal if you're not an old hand at this. (I'm not) Which hole did the throttle cable go through? Which connector on the carb is for fuel, and which for bypass? It's not rocket science - it's quite easy, and if you have pictures one quick look and you're 100% on track.
In addition to using this kit, I also changed out the fuel filter and fuel hose, changed the oil (SAE 30), and of course new gas. A few slow pulls with the ignition OFF to make sure the oil was not all sitting in the bottom and to make sure nothing was 'binding' or rubbing, and then turned on the red ON switch. The engine started up on the second pull! (Even when new it rarely did that).
No adjustments on the carb was needed. Truly a "plug and play" replacement. I can't comment on the longevity or reliability of it yet, since I just installed in. The original lasted over 23 years and with a new bottom cover probably still does! I'll repost in another 20 years on how this one holds up. :)
What can you say about an entire carburetor that costs less than a rebuild kit? It bolted on and all the linkages fit properly. I opened the fuel valve, closed the choke, and the engine roared to life on the third pull of the starter cord. So far so good.
I shut the engine off and restarted it several times with no problem. In fact, everything was fine... until the engine stalled. I took off the air cleaner and fuel was dribbling out of the carburetor throat, indicating a sunk float or stuck needle valve.
Shut off the fuel valve and pull off the float bowl. Do it slowly and keep your fingers on the float or the needle valve will fall out. Check it over, no problems found. Put everything back together, open the fuel valve, hit the choke and the engine roars to life...
... until it stalls again . Every time I ran it, there was about a 1 in 4 chance that the needle would stick, flooding the engine and barfing fuel out of the carburetor. Shut off the fuel valve, wait a few minutes, open the fuel valve back up, and everything is OK again. For a while.
The tank isn't building up excess pressure (the cap is vented, and the carb will flood with the gas cap removed). The float doesn't sink if I leave it in a container of water so it doesn't have a hole in it. It's the needle binding in the seat, but I'll be damned if I know why. There are no burrs, no debris, nothing that would cause it. I'm stumped.
This is the second carburetor (not the same brand) that's done this to me on this engine, so either they're all made in the same factory, or the problem is a design flaw. Either way, it usually works well enough that I can get some work done between its conniptions.
For the price I guess I shouldn't expect more, especially since this chipper is just about worn out. It's not worth buying an original carb, and I can live with the annoyance. I wouldn't put this carb on a chipper that was in better shape, though.
