Meanwhile, I'd heard the best grind of beans for the tastiest, highest quality cup comes from burr grinders, and I thought those special beans deserved the proper treatment. I didn't want to commit to an electric grinder, so I picked this one based on looks and reviews.
I have to say, manually grinding beans is certainly a labor of love. It takes about 8-10 minutes to grind enough beans to fill the filter in my 12oz Moka pot. It's really a pain in the butt, to be frank. The grinder itself is fine, though, this isn't a remark on the product itself as much as it is a remark on the process involved.
Good things about the grinder - the coarseness is easily adjusted. It's easy to grip and has rubber in the right places to help you keep it stable while laboring away. The extra sealable jar is smart and handy for grinding beans in advance and keeping the grinds fresh. Another positive, if you are someone who enjoys meditative mindfulness and sensory enjoyment - this grinder really does bring you fully into the process; you can feel the grinding in your hands, hear the crunching, and the smell of those ground beans is right there in your face. It's quite a round experience if you're into that.
Me, I don't get into ASMR, or need mindfulness in this form every day. I need a pot of espresso every day to function, and this is too much work for daily use. And I absolutely couldn't imagine using this for a medium grind 12-cup pot of drip coffee; it would take like 20 minutes to make enough grinds for your filter basket.
Bottom line is it's an effective, solid product for when you have time, energy, and high quality beans that warrant this special of treatment, or if you're a person into mindfulness and sensory input.
Adjusting your burr is going to take a little practice because unlike more expensive hand grinders there's no dial there's only a metal sprocket looking adjuster that you have to go off of and each time you loosen it you're sort of eye balling the burr here and there to know what grind you're looking for. So for ease of use its not easy out the gate but it is easy and super simple to adjust so it falls in between easy but not so easy. The hopper is perfect for single use and even making a little extra. The amazing thing about this grinder is you get an extra glass container so if you don't feel like grinding your coffee every morning or want some for the next day take a little extra time to grind another batch and store it in the container they give you. I really appreciate this with this grinder.
Short comings with it you get what you pay for to be honest. It's not the greatest quality in the sense of it does have a slight wobble when you're grinding with the burr. It's a ceramic burr not metal. If you really tighten it down theres still a slight wobble. Overall even being a ceramic grinder it still grinds the beans pretty good if you adjust your burr correctly there's very few if at all big pieces left in the container after you're done grinding. Other down side ceramic looks really gross after awhile of use even if you really clean it good and let it soak after each grind it still becomes discolored, it is what it is. For an entry level grinder I'm happy with my purchase it does its job pretty good and I personally would recommend it if you're starting out getting into grinding coffee. If you do have the extra money, spend a little extra get a hand grinder with a metal burr with a easier to understand burr adjuster.
