Product Description
Blumat a trusted brand that has been creating high quality watering solutions since 1965.
Blumat Watering Systems keep your houseplants watered.
Simple, efficient, and easy to install; your plants take care of themselves while you are on vacation or busy simply living your life.
Let Your Plants Look After Themselves!
Never Over or Under-Water Again
Blumat Classics function simply, using a siphon to pull water from a reservoir into a container, emitting it through the porous ceramic cone. Austrian-Engineered plant stakes that are superior in design, material quality, and durability.
How does it work?
As the soil dries, the ceramic cone delivers water gradually into the surrounding earth - thereby creating a vacuum within the cone which draws water from the nearby container of water. Once the soil is moistened the Blumat will cease flowing water. It waters your plants only as needed.
Adjust Water Flow
- If the Blumat is over-watering your plant, you can place the reservoir lower (relative to the Blumat). The reservoir can be as far as 12″ below the Blumat while still watering your plant, albeit slowly.
- If the Blumat is under-watering your plant, you can raise the reservoir relative to the Blumat. The higher the reservoir, the faster the flow rate.
Instructions
|
|
|
---|---|---|
Step 1Fill a bowl with water. Remove the top of the Blumat. Put both the top and ceramic cone into the bowl for at least 15 minutes. Submerge the ceramic cones. |
Step 2Remove the cone from the water, while keeping it as full of water as possible. Secure the green cap on top. *Tip: It is best to attach the cap and the ceramic bottom in the bowl - under the water. |
Step 3Push the ceramic cone into the soil. Place the white anchor at the end of the 3mm tubing into a reservoir. |
How To Control Watering Speed
|
|
|
---|---|---|
The water level in the water container is the same or slightly lower than the green Blumat cap. This is the ideal position, water is dispensed according to the degree of moisture in the soil. Water discharge approximate: 75 ml / 24 h or 125 ml / 24 h (XL) |
The water level in the water container is significantly lower than the green Blumat cap.Watering is dispensed according to the degree of moisture in the soil. As the roots need more energy to draw in water, water discharge reduces - Water discharge approx: 50 ml / 24 h or 75 ml / 24 h (XL) |
The water level in the water container is higher than the green Blumat cap. This positioning allows water to flow from the container into the cone, the Blumat Classic therefore constantly discharges water even if the soil is moist enough. Water discharge approx: 150 ml / 24 h, or 200 ml / 24h (XL) |

1. Simple & effective - It's a simple system but very effective. You simply fill a cone with water, place the cap back on, and insert into the soil of the plant. I agree with some reviewers that it's helpful if the soil is a little moist before getting the cone to go in more easily.
2. No overwatering - The plant drinks as much water as it needs. It also means that instead of watering the plant with a watering can, the soil doesn't dry out to the point of water just "running through" the soil instead of being absorbed.
3. Convenient & Easy - Instead of having to take each plant to the sink to be watered, the plant can stay put, and all that is needed is to refill the water vessel you have next to the pot.
4. Use less water - When I'm watering my plants with a watering can, I use much more water to really get the plant soaked. With this method, I used about 6 ounces of water which the plant drinks over a few days.
Overall, a great purchase.
On the flip side they also regularly dry out and it’s super hard to tell that they have dried out. It looks like there is water in the vessel still and you think it’s fine but then you find the cone is empty and it’s not been working for who knows how long.
I check them every few days so it’s not like I’m abandoning anything.
It’s hard to get the green caps on and off as well since I seem to need to keep refilling the ones that dry out - to replace the cap properly I almost always need to take the whole thing out of the pot - which ends up making a mess of dirt on whatever surface my plant is on.
The real reason they are getting 1 star - I contacted customer service on their website asking for help given that I have a lot of them and can’t seem to get them to work. They never replied or offered any suggestions. Not even an AI reply or acknowledgment.
I’m going to keep trying them because i already made the investment and because I feel like if other people got them to work I should be able to, but I certainly can’t recommend them to others at this point in time.
1. All the potted plants were still alive but just barely. They all showed signs of stress from lack of water.
2. The containers I filled with water still had water in them so the lack of watering was not due to empty water reservoirs.
Conclusion: Taking into account that the plants were still alive (just barely) after 1 week in 100+ temperatures, the watering stakes were adequate for the job. However, if I had stayed away for longer than 1 week, I may have returned home to a bunch of dead plants. Or if the temperatures were 110+, a week may have been too long and the end result would have been dead plants. The cost-effective factor then comes into play: the watering stakes may work for outdoor use but then I would need to use more than one stake per potted plant in order to keep it hydrated during the extreme Arizona summer. Then the reasonably priced watering stakes turn into an expensive purchase because I have to buy several sets. Based on my experience, it appears that the Blumat watering stakes will be great for indoor use but not so much for outdoor use (unless using multiple stakes per plant) if you live in a hot/dry climate.

And wow! The simplicity of this system is incredible. Follow the very simple instructions and voila, your plants are watered.
Want more/less flow? Move the water container higher/lower.
Want to provide water for a longer period? Use a bigger water container.
The only thing I'm worried about it root rot. So while I'm at home I'll likely pause refilling my water containers for 3-4 days to allow the soil to dry up.

1) Make sure you try them for at least 2 weeks before your planned vacation to make sure they are set up correctly.
2) make sure to lightly sand entire (pottery) surface of stakes
3) soak stakes and tops (attached to tubes) in a container for 1 hour
4) leaving both pieces in the container with water, make sure the stakes are filled with water (while you are holding it under the water) and place cap on and off several times until all the air has been released and there are no more air bubbles coming out of the end of tube. Watch carefully for this while all parts are submerged.
5) after watering your plants the “traditional” way, place stake into soil gently (without disrupting plant roots). Depending on the size of your plant, you might need additional stakes.
6) place the end of tube into container with water (depending on how long you are gone, the container should be large enough to hold a sufficient amount of water).
***after set up, you should notice water decreasing from the container. Keep in mind, if your soil was wet initially, your plant will require less water from the stakes. Once the soil is no longer wet from the “traditional” watering, you will notice your plant “drinking daily” from the stakes.
If you see that one is not working, remove from soil, rinse, sand the stake again, soak, place cover on and off again several times (while your holding both pieces under water) until no bubbles come out of the tube anymore. Then place the stake in your soil and try again.
The first time I used these for my plants (out of town for 5 weeks) I put all my plants into my bathroom, just in case the system did not Work properly. I wanted to make it easier for my neighbour to water everything in case it was no successful. (I had someone stop by weekly to make sure everything was ok). I also bought large buckets from Home Depot (approx. $3 each) so the plants were sure to have enough water.
It worked perfectly!!!! My buckets were large enough, that my neighbour never had to add extra water. The plants “took what they needed”. When I returned home, my plants looked green and so happy. Actually better than “traditional” watering. I took them out of the bathroom and placed them all back where they belonged throughout my house. I was so happy with the results, I’ve decided to permanently “water” my plants with the stakes. Much easier and the plants love it! Last 4 pictures are plants in their permanent locations with stakes set up. I check water levels and add as necessary. Super easy!! It’s a little time consuming to set up initially, but well worth it!!! Plants will ❤️ You and you will save time in the long run!!! It’s been a month since I’ve returned and my plants are thriving and sooo happy!!!
HIGHLY recommend! Read other reviews for tips!!! I have a lot of plants so I ordered 2 sets.
