With the purchase of that bundle and the revelation that (duh!) we’d be able to harvest our own worm castings for our garden, I became pretty excited that this kid of mine wanted to do all of the work to raise worms that would actually benefit our garden and not just potentially be getting loose and squirming around my house. My preconceived ideas of how this might go (worms escaping and squirming at inopportune moments) proved to be inaccurate. One of ours escaped the first day, but it was quickly retrieved and in the month we’ve had them, it’s never happened again. The seller sent pretty detailed instructions on how to care for the worms and how to get them settled down after shipment so that they aren’t trying to escape and squirm through your house, and we found their instruction sheet to be very helpful.
Our worms arrived only a couple of days after we placed the order — not the projected week that Amazon had suggested it might take for the shipping. What a fun surprise! They arrived healthy and whole, and my daughter felt like a new adoptive mother. She had their worm farm ready and followed the instructions that came with them, coupled with the knowledge she’d gained from the online course she’d so eagerly taken. The seller seemed to go out of their way to be sure that everything would go well for our new worms and that we would be completely satisfied. We were definitely completely satisfied! Not only did they go to great care to ship the worms and to be sure we were equipped with all of the knowledge we needed to get our worms off to a good start, but I also love the idea of supporting a small business.
I can definitely see us buying more worms some time in the future from this seller. I’m gonna let my little one continue with the ones we have for now, and then we’ll add more to her farm as time goes on. I highly recommend buying your worms from this seller! You won’t be disappointed.
My elderly Moms -- 96-years-old -- had made a practice of buying 25 lb bags of navel or valencia oranges at the ranch up the road from us, and she would go through a bag in less than two weeks for the juice. I saw an opportunity for composting, and built some bins. Citrus peel requires more patience and "special handling"; it has to rot into a brown mush before it's ready for red worms -- who otherwise recoil from fresh citrus oil in the peels. But I was producing some of the richest worm castings and worm pee imaginable. I would boast about my vast legions and armies of red worms. It would often become a task when I needed the mature compost: I had to separate my babies from the compost material, and it would often look as though I had little chunks of meat sauce amidst piles of red, writhing spaghetti. That experience followed my first purchase of farm-grown worms.
You have to keep the compost process moving forward, so you always have a bin with plenty of worms, and you'd never need to purchase more. But we stopped buying 25lb bags of oranges, and I used up all my mature compost. The process is not too different from keeping a sourdough starter in your refrigerator to make bread. Some families had starters that were a hundred years old. But for the composting, the long interruption of our practice meant that I had to buy more worms and start over.
These worms are pampered for their travel by the seller, arriving in neatly-tied little cotton bags with peat moss for their comfort. I didn't find any dead worms. When I transferred them to a bin full of partially-composted horse-apples, they soon began to flourish.
I was also impressed with the page of information and directions provided by the seller. I wish him good luck and happiness in his business, and may buy from him again as needed.
